Jeremy Renner, who pleasantly surprised fans with a Marvel voice role in What If…? Season 2, celebrated his 53rd birthday yesterday. While often overlooked by many fans, Renner stands out as one of the funniest actors among the Avengers during interviews. The Hawkeye star once revealed in a fun interview the Avenger whose powers he would like to trade with. Surprisingly, it was neither Iron Man nor Captain America; Renner wanted to become the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Renner’s Hawkeye may be considered an under-appreciated hero, but in real life, the Mayor of Kingstown actor has a tale of bravery and courage. He survived a horrendous snowplow accident that resulted in 30 broken bones and a collapsed lung.
Jeremy Renner May Trade His Sharp-Shooting Skills To Become Spider-Man
In 2016, Marvel actors came together for an exceptional crossover in Joe and Anthony Russo’s Captain America: Civil War. In the film, the team, excluding Thor and Hulk, splits into two under Iron Man and Captain America. This plot point became a lighthearted discussion when the cast of the film attended a European Press Conference for promotions.
The interviewer inquired if everyone ended up on the team they wanted or if they desired to switch. Chris Evans quickly chimed in, joking that he kind of wanted to be on Team Iron Man. However, when the interviewer rephrased the question to ask which Avenger’s powers they would want to switch with, Evans answered that his pick would be Vision. Nevertheless, he clarified that he didn’t want to put on Vision’s makeup.
Paul Bettany wasn’t interested in switching powers with Evans, humorously responding, “I’m okay where I’m”. However, the laughter-inducing moment in the event occurred when the interviewer turned to Jeremy Renner. He scoffed at the interviewer and asked, “What?” in the most amusing way, making the entire room burst into laughter. However, he did provide an answer that others least expected. Renner shared (via Flicks And The City):
“Spider-Man. Yeah… I’d do this [pretends to use web shooters on the interviewer] on you. Get out of here [pretends to web Robert Downey Jr.].”
Interestingly, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man made his Marvel debut in the Civil War movie. Renner might have jokingly teased his fellow Avengers actors, whom he had been working with since the early 2010s, by naming a character who joined more recently.
Jeremy Renner Came In Support Of Spider-Man When Disney-Sony Negotiations Broke Down
Right after the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Sony’s attempts to negotiate a new Spider-Man deal with Marvel (Disney) fell through. Marvel left the planned third project, Spider-Man: No Way Home, in August 2019. Many fans and Marvel actors protested the decision and came in support of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Renner took to his Instagram to write a note to Sony, asking them to return Spider-Man to its roots, Marvel and Stan Lee.

Following the fan reactions, both studios re-entered negotiations, and a new deal was struck in September 2019. However, Renner hasn’t had an opportunity to work with Holland ever since. After his accident, Renner expressed his interest in returning to the franchise, stating at the Phoenix Fan Fusion convention, “If Marvel wants me back, I’ll do it in a heartbeat.”
Captain America: Civil War and all other Marvel movies are now available for streaming on Disney+.
