On Monday, Grammy winner Lil Nas X unveiled the title and cover for his upcoming song, J Christ, which is set for release on Friday. And just after this, the controversy erupted, and the artist got backlash for that cover art.
Following all these trolls on social media, the rapper/singer comes up to defend himself that in no way is he trying to mock Jesus. The 24-year-old is known for giving references to religion in his works. Despite his self-defense, people now show less interest in buying his upcoming single.
How Lil Nas X Responds to Criticism Over the Cover Art for His Latest Single
Lil Nas X took to X, formerly known as Twitter on Monday (8 January) to unveil the title and cover for his upcoming song, J Christ with a caption that goes saying: ‘”MY NEW SINGLE IS DEDICATED TO THE MAN WHO HAD THE GREATEST COMEBACK OF ALL TIME!”
Soon after, criticism started pouring on the Old Town Road performer, and then he decided to give it back in his style.
“The crazy thing is nowhere in the picture is a mockery of jesus,” Lil Nas X – real name Montero Lamar Hill – tweeted an hour after the reveal.
“Jesus’s image is used throughout history in people’s art all over the world. I’m not making fun of s***. yall just gotta stop trying to gatekeep a religion that was here before any of us were even born. stfu.”
The cover art he posted is seen as five people lifting Lil Nas X, who is lying naked, only covered by lime green fabric – on a cross.
This is not the first time that his works have been criticized. In 2021, when his Montero (Call Me by Your Name) came out, then also he was hugely criticized for his portrayal as a devil and the way he depicted it.
How Fans Are Reacting?
As all these happen, fans of the rapper are saying that this time it’s taunting and they seem to be reluctant to buy the single.
it’s just such a boring concept at this point. likeeee pick something different idk.

I think he’s doing too much with the religion thing. He should just pick another theme or other symbolics.
(On the other hand, the people acting shocked should remember some of their fav’ artists also used religion for controversy, it’s not new in the music industry. 🥲)

Why not have a picture of the actual Jesus who was the one who was actually crucified at the cross instead of you? Simple.

He’s still in the same era since he came out. Boring boring

the baiting is so obvious this time, it’s corny. I wish he understood that his talent speaks for itself. He doesn’t have to rely on shock value and offense every time

Earlier, he on his X account said that he is just an artist expressing himself in different ways.
