While Top Gun: Maverick didn’t make it through to the other side in the ‘Best Picture’ category, the Joseph Kosinski-helmed blockbuster film did bag an Oscar for ‘Best Sound.’ But where Tom Cruise fans celebrated the win, DC fans were much less thrilled to find out that The Batman didn’t receive the Academy Award instead.

Top Gun 2 was up against some tough competition with All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Batman, and Elvis, all nominated for the ‘Best Sound’ category. And while it did emerge victorious on Sunday evening, fans of Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader seem to be anything but happy as the two sides go to war on Twitter about the same.

Top Gun: Maverick Welcomes An Oscar for Best Sound

A global box office success and the highest-grossing movie of 2022, Top Gun: Maverick turned out to be a catalyst for the film industry’s resuscitation. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the $1.4 billion sequel not only saved cinema but also ended up becoming the biggest global hit in Tom Cruise‘s acting career, surpassing even Mission: Impossible – Fallout, his most profitable project worth $800 million.

Starring Cruise as Pete Mitchell along with Miles Teller’s Bradley Bradshaw, the film is a sequel to Tony Scott’s Top Gun which came out more than three decades ago, back in 1986. The action/adventure sequel also stars the likes of Glen Powell, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, and Monica Barbaro.

Besides garnering a number of accolades, Top Gun 2 also landed two Golden Globe nominations and six Oscar nominations including one for Best Picture. And at the 95th Academy Awards, Kosinski’s film ended up winning the glistening trophy for Best Sound. However, it looks like not everyone is too ecstatic about Maverick’s win, especially DC fans.

Among the list of candidates running for Best Sound was Matt Reeves’ The Batman starring Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz, which unfortunately enough for the DCU fanbase, didn’t make it through past the nominations.

Grossing around a sum of $710 million internationally, The Batman certainly emerged victorious in both the domestic and global circuits. While the movie received mixed reviews from the audience, it did earn critical acclamation for the most part. And DC fans are enraged to see the Pattinson-starrer lose to Top Gun: Maverick at the 2023 Oscars.

While some have clearly picked sides, fans who seem to have a penchant for both films are much less furious over Top Gun 2‘s win, claiming that while The Batman should’ve won an Oscar, the former is not completely undeserving of the award for Best Sound.
