Ayo Edebiri’s Love For Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy Got Her Grounded

During the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, held on January 15, 2024, The Bear star Ayo Edebiri crossed paths with Succession‘s Matthew Macfadyen. While Macfadyen is now synonymous with the role of Tom Wambsgans in Succession, he first rose to prominence with the 2005 romantic drama film Pride & Prejudice, based on Jane Austen’s novel of the same name.

In the film, Macfadyen plays the role of Mr. Darcy, the primary love interest of protagonist Elizabeth “Lizzy” Bennet. Macfadyen’s performance in the film made him an instant heartthrob among fans, especially teen girls, including Edebiri.

The actress revealed to Macfadyen that she had an image of him as Mr. Darcy, on her laptop when she was a teenager. However, she was grounded by her parents after they found out about the image. Edebiri recounted the incident to Edebiri, imitating her father, and said:

“Yeah, so I got grounded. Because my dad was like, who’s this man? Who’s this guy in the coat? With the beautiful hair?”

Macfadyen was amused with Edebiri’s story and later jokingly commended Edebiri’s parents for grounding her. While speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Macfadyen admitted that he finds it flattering that people still recognize him as Mr. Darcy, especially since the role was a long time ago.

Ayo Edebiri and Matthew Macfadyen were both nominated for their work in The Bear and Succession respectively at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. Moreover, their shows were also nominated in several other major categories. Edebiri took home the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Award for her performance as Sydney Adamu in The Bear.

Meanwhile, Macfadyen won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. While both actors won the respective categories they were nominated in, The Bear and Succession emerged as the night’s biggest winners, with six Emmy Awards to their name, a joint highest for any single show. The Bear was also named the Outstanding Comedy Series while Succession was crowned as the Outstanding Drama Series.
