Renner’s breakthrough role came in the 2008 war film The Hurt Locker. For his role, who wore rank E-7, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Yet, he again received another Oscar nomination just after two years for The Town for Best Supporting Actor.

Though today, he might be known as Marvel’s “Greatest Marksman,” aka Hawkeye, he first appeared in Thor 2011. Since then, the actor has reprised his role as the arrow-slinging archer in various Marvel films and Disney+ miniseries of the same name.

After securing an Avengers role, Renner would almost have become the name of another franchise, too. It’s the Tom Cruise starrer Mission: Impossible. But he genuinely regrets starring in the 5th installment of Mi.

Jeremy Renner’s Genuine Regret Over Mission: Impossible 5

The Mission: Impossible franchise almost replaced Tom Cruise with Jeremy Renner

Jeremy Renner’s appearance in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation was his last in the M:I Saga. The next film, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, did not feature Brandt returning for more escapades. The reason the actor didn’t return was apparently boiled down to simple scheduling conflicts. In a 2015 interview with Playboy, the Marvel star explained:

“This Mission was like all the Missions — great action set pieces with an idea of a story somewhere in there. There have been four successful versions before this one, so why would I fight the process? I just went and gave to the best of my ability in the scenario I was in. Now, was it the best scenario for me? The best at what I’m good at? F—, no. Not having any information about what the heck is going on doesn’t empower any artists to be at the best of their ability.”

This came after Renner publicly expressed hissy fits working only in a few segments of Mi5 production. The director brought the actor back again for Rogue Nation, but this time, another blockbuster was waiting for him, which was Avengers Infinity War.

Even director Christopher McQuarrie recalled to Empire, “We didn’t know what [Fallout] was, so we couldn’t provide a schedule.” It’s obvious Renner’s character was ignored in the 5th installment; he was unaware of many things, so he played his best bet by not returning for the 6th sequel.

It won’t be wrong to say that the franchise’s previous intervention with Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and introducing Jeremy Renner’s William Brandt as its new leading man for the upcoming blockbusters would be tasteless.

He would have been in the upcoming Mission: Impossible flicks. But his Marvel character only grew stronger with each movie. And by the time Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation came out in 2015, Avengers: Age of Ultron had already made way for Renner.
