It has been more than 3 decades since Julia Roberts and Richard Gere’s Pretty Woman was released. While the movie has become a cult classic now, it is not a movie that would have been made today. Having a pr**titute as the female lead who falls in love with a minted businessman, critics labeled it as a fairytale written by a hardcore feminist.
While the debate about the movie’s nature still rages on and will certainly continue to rage on, one thing cannot be denied— the absolute fashion icon the movie is today. Even though several outfits from the rom-com flick remain unforgettable, the iconic white and blue dress has remained a fashion icon over the years. And the price of that one dress will blow your mind.
The Price of Julia Robert’s Iconic White And Blue Dress From Pretty Woman
Pretty Woman did not only show the world that people do have an appetite for unconventional romances and that taboo subjects can be mainstream cinema but was also a true statement icon. From the classic red dress that transformed Julia Roberts‘ Vivian into a lady of class to the polka dot polo dress, there are several outfits that have become regular in mainstay fashion.
While these two dresses were more on the elegant side, the movie also gave us numerous street-style attires. One of these is the iconic white and blue dress, consisting of a tank top and a skirt connected with a hoop loop. Designed by Hunza G originally (see Harpers Bazar), the dress is now worth $245 today (see Influencer Style).
Yet in an interview with British Vogue, Roberts revealed the price of the dress when they bought it almost three decades ago,
“The funny thing about this dress is, I think it was about $20. It was, I think, black and white and the costume designer changed it up to make it a little bit different.”
To think that such a legendary dress that has become a true fashion icon today had only cost 20 dollars is flabbergasting. In a world where even its knock-off would be worth at least 50 dollars, the price of the dress back then proves the huge influence cinema has on the real world and the sham the fashion industry is.
The Truth Behind Julia Roberts’ Iconic Red Jacket
If the price of the white and blue hoop dress were baffling for you, wait until you discover the truth behind the red jacket the actress wore over it and later had it tied around her waist as a fashion statement.
Roberts’ iconic dress would be nowhere without the red jacket, and its bright red color was instrumental in emphasizing the white and blue dress as well as helping the actress’s titular character stand out. Yet the red jacket wasn’t carefully curated by the designer or brought from a store. It was instead taken from a passer-by while shooting.
As director Gary Marshall revealed to the Today show, a jacket was supposed to be part of the scene where Vivian is out on the streets, yet the production was unable to find one. So while shooting, they saw a passer-by wearing that red jacket and promptly offered them money in exchange for it. And that is how Julia Roberts’ famous look was put together, making it one of the most legendary looks in the whole history of cinema.
Pretty Woman can be streamed on Hulu.
