Julia Roberts has always performed terrifically on the big screens. An extraordinarily talented actress with a brilliantly charming personality, the 55-year-old has worked with numerous top-rated stars and visionary filmmakers. In this list comes the renowned and thoroughly incredible director, Steven Spielberg as well for the 1991 film, Hook.
But while many will regard the Roberts-Spielberg coming together for the movie as an outstanding collaboration, the off-screen circumstances that both the actress and director, along with the rest of the cast, went through has made the filmmaker not want to cast the star in his movie ever again.
Julia Robert’s Difficult Behaviour On The Sets Of Hook Drove Everyone Crazy
Although nearly every single Julia Roberts movie has been widely loved by both the audience as well as fans, the actress’s behavior off-sets is known to be rather infamous. Something similar happened on the sets of the 1991 movie Hook, which ended up disturbing the entire cast.
According to reports, Roberts’s mental health while shooting the Steven Spielberg-directed film wasn’t at its best. Sources claim,
“Apparently, Roberts’s behavior was so bad on the set of Hook that the crew called her ‘Tinkerhell.’ There may have been a reason for her bad behavior. Sutherland, who she met on the set of Flatliners was allegedly cheating on her with an exotic dancer. The two broke up just days before their wedding, and Roberts never gave herself a break. She jumped right onto the set of Hook, and the crew may have suffered because of that.”
While bringing more than enough personal baggage to the sets every day thanks to her ruined mental health must have been exceptionally hard for Julia Roberts herself, the crew of the $300M Robin Williams movie too ended up suffering because of it.
Steven Spielberg Sympathized With Julia Roberts But Never Worked With Her Again
During the shooting, Julia Roberts’s co-star in the movie Dante Basco had some nice words to say about her. Recalling his experience while filming with her, Basco said,
“I remember meeting her in the trailer for the first time and being like, ‘Oh my god’. But you know, she was always sweet to me.”
As it turns out, the $300 million movie Hook director Steven Spielberg too sympathized with Roberts and showed understanding of her situation. Referring to her, the worldwide renowned director said,
“Julia probably went through the most trying times of her life, and it was simply bad timing for all of us that she happened to start on Hook at that low point.”
But although he did feel sorry for her, the 1991 fantasy adventure ended up being the first and last movie for which Steven Spielberg and Julia Roberts collaborated to date, judging how the filmmaker hasn’t cast the actress in any of his movies ever since.
