Call of Duty has maintained its dominant position at the top of first-person shooter games for a long time and it seems like it might have a strong contender as The Finals, the multiplayer shooter title from Embark Studios has hit 10 million players only after over two weeks of its release.

This has made the game one of the most popular first-person shooter titles this year in a year that’s been stacked with some of the biggest game releases. This big milestone has even shocked the developers as they weren’t expecting such a great reception to the multiplayer title.

The Finals is a multiplayer shooter where players engage in battles in fully destructible arenas with exciting and fast-paced gameplay and complete objectives while surviving to come on top. The game was shadow dropped at The Game Awards 2023 and was immediately available for players to download and jump right in.

The game was already much hyped and has now surpassed 10 million only two weeks after its release. The developer, Embark Studios took to the official X/Twitter handle of The Finals to share the milestone with the players and thank them. The tweet reads:

To all you 10 million contestants (!) who have entered the arena since launch — a huge THANK YOU!

This a big achievement for the developers as this is the first game from Embark Studios after the studio was founded in 2019. The developers were not expecting this kind of boost in the player base in such a short time. The executive producer of The Finals and chief content officer at Embark Studios, Rob Runesson stated:

We’re so humbled and excited by the response from the community so far – 10 million players this soon is something we never could have dreamed of. We will continue to improve and add to the experience, and make sure we keep surprising our community for years to come.

The Finals has been popular since its open beta as it saw 7.5 million players across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC via Steam. The game’s fast-paced gameplay and unique mechanics attracted players like no other game. The open beta saw such a massive influx of players that it ended a day later and had to introduce a login queue to maintain the player count.

One of the main reasons behind the game being so popular and seeing such a massive player base is that it is free to play on all the platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. However, players on Xbox must have an Xbox Game Pass Core subscription to be able to play the game. Another reason is that the game brings something unique that players haven’t seen in other multiplayer shooters and are intrigued to try the game.

According to Steam charts, the game has been played by 110,360 players in the last 24 hours with the all-time peak player count of 242,399. The game is currently in Season 1 which came with the game’s release and has four maps that are all different than each other. While one map is set in the streets, the other is set on the skyscrapers. The maps are called Seoul, Monaco, Las Vegas, and Skyway Stadium.

However, developer Embark Studios has not revealed any roadmap for The Finals as it does not want to overpromise and underdeliver but wants to see what it brings players that enhances their experience. The game has already started working on bringing events and updates like other live-service games as it recently brought a new Christmas update just in time for the holidays with a decorated and snowy Monaco map, themed outfits, and more for players.

The Finals also got several improvements with the latest update such as nerfs and its anti-cheat system which had been under scrutiny for some time, but it seems that developers are paying attention to the community, and it’d be exciting to see what Embark Studios has on its minds to retain this massive player base.
