X-Men ’97 will be concluding its first season run with the release of its tenth episode on May 15, 2024. The showrunner, Beau DeMayo, has appealed to fans on social media to prepare for anxiety attacks, hinting at the high-octane action and intense drama in the finale. As the season approaches its finale, Magneto actor Matthew Waterson opened up about his role with Phase Zero.

Speaking to the online channel, Waterson, at one point, revealed that his character could’ve easily taken down Thanos during the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Waterson’s simple logic was that Magneto control metals and Thanos’s “metal glove” (Infinity gauntlet) would’ve been easier to remove from his hand. Waterson shared with Phase Zero:

“Magneto might have been an interesting addition into the Thanos thing, because the glove is metal. [He could’ve health with Thanos] relatively quickly.”

However, one fan on X disagreed with Waterson’s take. The fan reminded the voice actor that Thanos could’ve removed Magneto’s abilities with Reality Stone. The fan also added that Thanos never got to unleash the full power of the gauntlet of Stones since he had a clear goal to destroy half the population and then the Stones. Another fan also agreed that Magneto wouldn’t have stood a chance against the Stones. The fan shared:

Magneto is also a villain, having focused goals similar to Thanos. While it is interesting to see them together on the screen and even fight against each other, it is sure that it will be no easy takedown for either of them.

The latest episode of X-Men ’97 saw Magneto rejecting Xavier’s dream of a co-existence between humans and mutants. As he is about to declare war on humans, Magneto invites the X-Men to join him. Only Rogue and Roberto join him, but the rest of the X-Men split into two teams. One team under the Cyclops goes to Asteroid M to confront Magneto, while the other under Storm and Jean sets out to take out the villain Bastion.

Both teams face setbacks as the episode comes to a conclusion. On Asteroid M, Wolverine guts and seriously injures Magneto, who begins ripping the adamantium metal from Wolverine’s skin. The story will continue in Tolerance is Extinction Part 3. These episodes follow the comics storyline of Fatal Attractions, where Magneto leaves Logan horribly injured and on the brink of death after stripping his adamantium skeleton.

Following this ordeal, Charles will mindwipe Magneto, which will result in the melding of both their psyches. The resulting entity is Onslaught, one of the scariest villains in the MCU as far as the mutants are considered. It is entirely possible that Onslaught is set to become the main antagonist of X-Men ’97 Season 2.

All nine episodes of X-Men ’97 are now available for streaming on Disney+.
