GTA 6‘s trailer was released on December 5, and it received a fantastic response from fans eager to get a first look at the title. After announcing that the teaser for the title would go live on December 5 at 9 a.m. ET, Rockstar faced yet another leak, which caused it to be released almost 15 hours earlier.
Despite the change in plans, the trailer has already shattered records with over 100 million views and is not showing any signs of stopping anytime soon. It surpassed GTA 5‘s trailer in terms of likes within 35 minutes. With so much traction gained by the title, things are looking up for the studio and the iconic franchise. Within a day, the trailer has already smashed some of the records previously held by various forms of media.
GTA 6 Trailer: Causing a Ruckus Everywhere
Currently, with a whopping 107 million views on YouTube, the trailer and the game are being discussed on almost every social media platform. This popularity can be gauged by comparing its views with GTA 5’s trailer. As mentioned, GTA 6’s debut footage gained 104 million views in a day. On the other hand, GTA 5‘s trailer, which came out 12 years ago, has managed to get 101 million views.
Amazingly, the latter was sitting at 96 million views for quite some time but started receiving more views and crossed the 100 million mark right around the same time as the former.
People praised the attention to detail and the graphical fidelity of the game, which are displayed in the fantastic teaser. The trailer is also longer than those of Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 5.
Despite this, the actual length of the teaser is only a minute and a half. The length, which sounds very short in theory, is enough to smash records held by full-length YouTube videos. The game has broken the record for the most views on a YouTube video within 24 hours. This excludes music videos. The famous content creator, Mr. Beast, held the previous record.
While popular K-pop boy band BTS still holds the record when music videos are considered, this is a remarkable achievement, considering that the video in question is just a teaser. It speaks volumes about the growth of gaming and how it has evolved since GTA 5‘s trailer dropper 12 years ago. The footage isn’t the only announcement regarding the game that broke records.
The tweet announcing the teaser’s release window in early December was the most-liked gaming tweet ever. It was then dethroned by the tweet that revealed that the trailer would be coming out on December 5.
On the social media analysis site SocialBlade, one can see Grand Theft Auto’s trailer’s impact on Rockstar Games’ YouTube channel’s total views, subscribers, and comments. It will be interesting to see how long it can maintain its momentum. The buzz will inevitably be exhausted thanks to word of mouth, and the rewatch potential isn’t much thanks to its short duration.
People were looking forward to it not just because of the series’ history of creating video games, which have been iconic for various reasons. But also because Rockstar Games had been trying to keep total radio silence on the game’s development progress. These attempts, however, were unsuccessful.
This was thanks to the number of leaks throughout the game’s development. Apart from the game footage leaked by the UK-based hacker Arion Kurtaj, there were also tips about the game’s setting, the teaser’s release around Rockstar’s anniversary, etc. The road to the footage release had not been smooth by any means whatsoever; as mentioned earlier, the teaser had to be put out early due to a leak. Many team members, including some developers, were disappointed about the leak.
While the teaser won’t be fading into oblivion anytime soon, the replaceability of content in current times will most certainly come into play. Nevertheless, it is a milestone for the game, the studio, and the gaming fraternity. Grand Theft Auto 6 has a tentative release date of 2025 and will be available for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 at launch.
