The Last of Us Part 2 saw a great deal of highlights and controversy when it came out on the PlayStation 4. After all these years of waiting, it seems like the game is properly making its way to the PlayStation 5.
A recent tweet (among other sources) suggests that the game has been in development for some time now, and it will arrive soon on the new console. It’s also possible that The Last of Us Part 2 comes out on PC, given its massive player base across both platforms.
Multiple Sources Confirm the Development of The Last of Us 2’s Remaster
Recently, a renowned X account, PlaystationSize, posted about the game’s possible development. On the other hand, a member of the Naughty Dog team happened to update their profile on LinkedIn.
Mark P., the Lead Outsource Artist at Naughty Dog, has an impressive LinkedIn profile that gave out some key details about the game. It read:
Responsible for overseeing the production of all outsourced environment art assets, weapons and interactive props for two iconic titles The Last of Us: Part One and The Last of Us 2: Remastered.
At the time of writing, the details seem to have been altered. Given how close we are to The Game Awards (7th December), there’s a safe possibility that the title might get announced at the show or sometime around it.
Four months ago, a rumor started circulating that claimed that The Last of Us Part 2 was indeed coming to the newer generation of PlayStation. This happened when the game’s composer, Gustavo Santaolalla, said that players can actually walk up to his character in the next version of the game.
The Last of Us Is Seeing Multiple Entries in the Future
In the last few months, information around a possible ‘online’ version of The Last of Us has been telling us how the game’s development either stopped or was progressing a bit slowly. However, the game’s director, Vinit Agarwal, confirmed that the game is still being worked on.
The popular HBO adaptation of the game is also seeing a second season arrive in 2025, filming of which will begin early next year. This marks 2024 as a big year for The Last of Us fans, or at least, fans who like hearing about the game and receiving official updates.
The news of a native version of the game coming to the PS5 isn’t escaping skepticism. Comments on a Reddit post discussing the same have some concerns regarding another remaster. User NotTheRocketman aptly says:
I really wonder what this will entail, especially since TLOU2 runs so well on the PS5 already. I’m sure it will sell well regardless, but I’m kind of getting tired of these re-releases that don’t really add much to the experience.
It’s a fair concern when players see the same title being rinsed and repeated in hopes of marketing it for a new generation of consoles. We’ve seen this happen with other major releases like Grand Theft Auto V, and it adds quite a bit of contempt to the reputation of an otherwise respectful franchise. Nonetheless, Naughty Dog has the knack for adding and rehashing content without making it seem like there’s no effort put into it.
After all, The Last of Us Part 1 (along with the port) received a lot of praise and sales for the game, finally reaching out to millions of more players worldwide. In the same vein, Part 2 will have to arrive not just on the PS5 but on PC too in order to reach a player base of millions globally.
