The end of the recently released, box-office bomb The Marvels had the three Marvels trying to stop the evil Dar-Benn from destroying the present MCU timeline. As Dar-Benn rips apart the space-time, a new rift is created leaking into the MCU’s main timeline.

Teyonah Parris‘ Monica Rambeau rushes to close the tear, absorbing both Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel’s powers, while positioning herself in the other reality through the rift created. As the rift starts to close, Rambeau remains on the other side, not explaining why she needs to stay there.

Soon enough the rift closes, trapping Rambeau on the other side, in an unknown reality. This is perhaps one of the biggest plotholes of the movie, posing questions like why didn’t Carol and Kamala use their Quantum bands to reverse the rift or why Rambeau willingly stayed back, not even trying to come back to Earth-616.

This apparent sacrifice of Rambeau has left fans puzzled, with many speculating it was just an excuse to further the storyline. leading to the ‘X-Men’ post-credit scene of The Marvels.

In one of the end credit scenes of The Marvels, Monia Rambeau wakes up in the other reality in a hospital bed with her mother Maria Rambeau alive and well. Confused at first, it doesn’t take her long to figure out that she is in the other reality and that Maria Rambeau isn’t her mother but somebody who wields the Quantum Bands and goes by the name of Binary.

Things become even more complex as Kelsey Grammer‘s Beast makes an appearance. The genius mutant-scientist explains that she is in another universe, where seemingly the X-Men exist. Beast even reports back to Professor X, and his lab bears the X-Men logo of the Fox’s X-Men universe.

While this is the first official confirmation that the X-Men are now connected with the main MCU universe, it still leaves the question of why Rambeau had to be trapped inside the other timeline. This unexplained plothole, leading to an even bigger one has fans asking whether Monica Rambeau’s sacrifice in The Marvels truly necessary. Or was it just a way of Marvel using the incident as an excuse to further the storyline?

While to some degree it does seem useless, only time and further Marvel projects would be able to explain why she seemingly stayed back in the other timeline.
