Dragon Ball is one of the most iconic anime and manga franchises, solely responsible for introducing a global audience to anime. The series is filled with iconic moments and, even decades later, continues to be one of the most beloved series. In 2009, a live-action adaptation movie was released, starring Justin Chatwin as Goku.
However, before the role was given to Justin Chatwin, renowned actor Tom Welling, who depicted Superman as Clark Kent in Smallville and brought Superman’s origin story to life, was also one of the actors who were shortlisted for the role but never got finalized.
Tom Welling was a candidate to play Goku in Dragon Ball Evolution
Although One Piece Live Action became the first series to ever have a successful live-action, there were several other series that failed to achieve any success.
Live-action adaptations have always been a failure for a very long time and one of the most iconic fails at the box office was Dragon Ball Evolution.
It flopped due to numerous reasons, some of them being way too fast-paced, many changes to the original storyline, and being accused of whitewashing.
The movie was released in 2009, and 20th Century Fox selected Chatwin to play Goku. However, before he was finalized for the role, there were many other prominent names to choose from.
One of them was the well-acclaimed character Tom Welling, who played Clark Kent in Smallville and did a very amazing job.
Although he was a featured actor, we don’t have any confirmed information about why he was not part of the movie, but he is surely not regretting his decision.
Justin Chatwin, as an actor, played his part but due to changes in the plot line and bad CGI effects, he couldn’t save the film from becoming a flop.
