The Office Reboot: 5 Reasons Why Series Revival Without Steve Carell is a Terrible Idea

5 Reasons Why Series Revival Without Steve Carell is a Terrible Idea

The Office is one of the most iconic sitcoms and Steve Carell’s Michael Scott was a character nobody could compare to. The beauty that the show presented in ways of humor, storytelling, and the sheer obliviousness that Michael offered was something no sitcom had ever dared to do before. Although that too was an adaptation of the British version of The Office, starring Ricky Gervais, the way Carell’s series shined was amicable.

Recently the reboot for Carell and John Krasinski’s The Office got the greenlight, making fans question whether or not it is a good idea in the first place. Not only is this a fully-fledged project but even Greg Daniels, the creator of the US version of the series is set to return to the series as well. So here are five reasons why the revival of the series might not be the best idea.

1. Repetition of Jokes

Although Steve Carell’s The Office had some of the best jokes, they had quite a lot of factors supporting them. The jokes that the show offered have to date made fans go and watch it again and again. Many even go on repeating the series without a break. Some very important factors that these jests held were the line delivery and powers. From improvised scenes to jokes that were prewritten, they had the power to them that could bring fans back again and again.

Watching the same joke again is different from using it elsewhere. A reboot is not necessarily a copy of the series and so there can and perhaps will be new and fresh jokes. Many could be appropriate to the times and could even ruin the essence of what made these jokes work in the first place. So much so that the series could even get canceled before it creates a foundation for itself.

2. Steve Carell’s Michael Scott Won’t Be There

It became very clear after the seventh season of The Office that the series was not held by the entire cast but by Steve Carell’s Michael Scott. Many managers came and went after Carell left and it became evident to the audience as well as the network that he was the show’s glue. Michael’s love for his co-workers, his naivety, his obliviousness, and various other qualities were shown so beautifully by the actor that they almost became one.

Whomsoever may come and take his place will not be Michael Scott, nor will they be Steve Carell. Whether they are a famed actor or not won’t matter too much because the Despicable Me actor was someone who basically became the reason why The Office was so good.

3. The Jokes No Longer Apply

Social acceptability and sensitivity have become a big part of the world now, something that was not as well spread while The Office was still on air. There were jokes made in the show that would now heavily not be acceptable. However, going back to watch the show and listening to the jokes makes them ironic. Adding them now would make it insensitive.

4. Reboots Rarely Ever Work

Lately Hollywood has been going through a dry patch. There have constantly been new movies that are merely live-action adaptations, sequels, and reboots. All of which have been received rather poorly, with the exception of a few. Whether it’s a Gossip Girls reboot or a Pretty Little Liars reboot, none worked out and none were liked by the audience. What is held by the original show is rarely comparable. This closes the door for even the slightest chance of any success for the new series.

5. The Audience’s Opinion on The Office

The audience’s opinion when it comes to any piece of media is very important. That is exactly why shows get canceled and franchises stop working. The Office could find itself with a similar fate if it does not manage to reach a majority of the audience. This also poses a problem because not only would the reboot have a responsibility to meet the expectations of the older fans but also find a way to reach out to the newer ones. This could result in botched and failed jokes overusing the woke culture.
