In the One Piece Live-Action, Monkey D. Garp is introduced as one of the strongest Admirals in the Marine force. He schemes to bring an end to Luffy’s madness about capturing the One Piece treasure before confronting him in the season finale. The Vice Admiral also gives special training lessons to Helmeppo and Koby to make them the best Marines.
Father to Monkey D. Dragon, grandfather to Monkey D. Luffy, and one of the most notable frenemy of Gold D. Roger, Garp has been in the One Piece universe since the Old Era. His powers may have weakened due to age but he still packs a punch, such that he could stand toe-to-toe and even defeat the original Seven Warlords of the Sea.
How Strong is Monkey D. Garp? Assessing Luffy’s Grandfather’s Abilities
Monkey D. Garp is considered to be the strongest Marine in the One Piece despite holding the rank of a Vice Admiral. Boasting powers of more than an Admiral level, Garp purposely held the V.A. position to gain autonomy. The live-action gave a sneak peek of his powers when the 78-year-old sent Luffy flying with the ‘Fist of Love’ technique.
Speaking of the manga, Garp’s incredible bulk and powers were hinted at by his ability to withstand a grievous blow to the stomach by Captain Morgan. He didn’t even notice he was bleeding. The Marine Instructor also defeated Coby and Helmeppo without much effort during their training.
Old Garp’s true abilities came to the foray in the Marineford Arc. Marco, who was able to thwart Akainu and Aokiji, was stopped in his tracks by a single punch that was infused with Armament Haki. Eiichior Oda also portrayed what would happen to the ecstatic Garp if he ever lost his temper when he was about to ‘kill Akainu’ but was prevented by Fleet Admiral Sengoku.

Egghead Arc featured some of the best scenes relating to Monkey D. Garp. After Koby was held captive by Blackbeard on the Pirate Island, Garp took the mission to rescue him. He eventually crossed paths with Fullalead in One Piece Chapter 1080, during which the old man unleashed the Galaxy Impact – a fist infused with Armament and Conqueror’s Haki that sent a gargantuan-powered shockwave that almost destroyed the whole town.
Garp has mastered all three kinds of Haki. His supreme-level Observation Haki was seen during his encounter with the invisible Shiryu, who he was able to sense and catch.
Interestingly, the younger version of the character was more powerful than the current version. Prime Garp is considered to be on the Pirate King Level. The manga has captured a few scenes from his most famous battles while also revealing his past exploits.
During the Old Piracy Era, Garp and Pirate King Gol D. Roger used to be on equal footing. The two squared off multiple times but neither were successful in overcoming each other. Despite their differences, Garp and Roger teamed to bring an end to the reign of terror of Rocks D. Xebec.
It is also mentioned that Prime Garp needed a single punch to defeat Don Chinjao, the pirate who apparently possessed powers equating to splitting a continent. He got the nickname of ‘The Fist’ following his battle with Chinjao.
Eeichiro Oda Was Hesitant About Debuting Monkey D.Garp in One Piece Live-Action Season 1
The One Piece Live-Action roughly covers the first 90 Chapters. Garp doesn’t meet his grandchild until Chapter 431 but he plays a major role in the live-action as a Marine who is hot on the heels of the Straw Hat Crew. The two will of ‘D’ possessors square off in Episode 8 after many tense confrontations throughout the series.
As it turns out, Eiichiro Oda was also hesitant about giving Luffy’s grandfather so much screentime and feature a fan-favorite confrontation in Season 1. As revealed by producer Steven Maeda in an interview with Anime Senpai:-
“But there are some things that we tried and got into the show that initially he was gun-shy about. One of them was bringing up Garp as more of a present character in the first eight episodes.”
Fans criticized the early entry of Garp in the Netflix series. They believed it would’ve been better to introduce other major characters first, like Fire Fist Ace and Crocodile. Rest assured, it would be thrilling to watch Monkey D. Garp’s role in the next arcs, especially the live-action fight scenes with Blackbeard Pirates.
