Joe Biden and Donald Trump seem to be heading towards a showdown, a rehash of their battle in 2020. While there are a lot of criticisms levied at the two candidates separately, one major concern that has plagued the American people is the advanced ages of both these candidates, who seem to be the only choices for the people in the upcoming election.

Coming out to discuss the various issues that are being brought up concerning the upcoming elections, Joe Biden took a well-aimed jab at Donald Trump, while also defending the allegations of his ‘deteriorating’ mental faculties. The President talked about why he was a better candidate, saying that the other guy “can’t remember his wife’s name”.

Seth Meyers was in conversation with Joe Biden, talking about the various issues that are coming up in the elections of 2024. Among the things that the late-night host asked the president was how he would address the age issue that has been brought up by the American people for the upcoming election. This refers to the fact that Trump is 77 and Biden is 81. To this, the President replied:

“You got to take a look at the other guy. He’s about as old as I am, but he can’t remember his wife’s name, number one. Number two, it’s about how old your ideas are”

These remarks from Biden have taken the country by storm. Less of a controversy, the humor in these responses is what has charmed audiences, with the clip being shared again and again over social media. Meyers himself pointed the problem out in the speech Trump made, which has also become a talking point against the former president.

Donald Trump, ever since he entered the cultural zeitgeist as a politician in 2016, has been quick to give out jibes and resort to giving his opponents epithets as a part of his rhetoric. However, Biden’s quip has yet to receive a clapback from the former President, who is usually quick to clean up any mess his political rivals throw at him.

Biden’s talking points for the coming campaign seem to sidestep the problem of age and mental acumen to focus on what would take the country forward and which would take it back. Deciding to take the humorous route at a time when the country can be read as being divided might be the right approach for now, but could hurt his chances more than making them in the 2024 election.

No doubt, Trump could currently be readying a retort, one that would make an appearance in whichever late-night show he decides to make an appearance in.
