We saw Until Dawn again in the latest State of Play. as Ballistic Moon, not Supermassive Games, has finally confirmed the launch of this game for PS5 and PC. But a lot of fans have asked, why was there never an Until Dawn 2? According to a new report, there was an idea for a second installment that later became another title from this popular studio. Sony and Supermassive were in talks for a second game. But this never came through, for different reasons. The studio launched several titles, like The Quarry and The Dark Pictures Anthology.

Until Dawn and the sequel that never was

The Quarry was originally intended to be a direct sequel to Until Dawn.

Supermassive Games became a popular studio thanks to Until Dawn, the first of a long list of interactive movies and quick time events features that put the player in the decision-making process with the possibility of multiple endings. The core mechanic is to save as many characters as you can so they can help reach the end of the story. This studio later released numerous games with this kind of gameplay, which were well received by critics and players.

According to a report, there was a new Until Dawn game in development prior to the Supermassive Games acquisition from Nordisk Games. Many employees anonymously confirmed that The Quarry was at first an Until Dawn sequel. Sony and Supermassive were working together, but the owners of PlayStation did not really like that The Dark Pictures Anthology was a multiplatform game.

The studio has some complex times within the development of The Dark Pictures Anthology; employees lack management and the time and resources to accomplish a better work flow. This kind of problem was present in the first episodes of The Dark Pictures Anthology. It is said that The Quarry is a spiritual successor to Until Dawn. Supermassive Games and Sony have not spoken about these reports.

Supermassive Games and poor communication management

Supermassive Games has an impressive lineup of horror titles under its belt at this point.

One of the more interesting details about this different issue within Supermassive Games’ decision-making is that the studio has not even shared some of its big recent announcements on social media. Until Dawn will have a movie adaptation added to the release of Until Dawn for PS5 and PC. The studio has not mentioned or acknowledged this announcement in any way or form.

The studio launched the first episode of The Dark Pictures Anthology back in 2019 with Man of Medan; later in 2020, Little Hope was released. One year later came House of Ashes in 2021, and to close this first season of the game, The Devil in Me, in 2022. But the studio was never so busy, also launching The Quarry in 2022, thanks to 2K Games.

I'm a big fan of movies and videogames in general. I really love Pokémon and Godzilla. One of my favorite games is The Last of Us, Part II. A compelling and well-written story is always welcome.
