Zack Snyder currently making his own cinematic universe after his tumultuous run in the DCU with the Rebel Moon films. 2023’s Rebel Moon and its upcoming sequel are Snyder’s own creations and Netflix gave him complete freedom to execute his vision, unlike his days at Warner Bros. While Rebel Moon proved to be underwhelming, it set up an exciting arc for a sequel.
Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is set to release on Netflix this April and Snyder teased the evolution of the story from Part 1. The differences that he described between the two films are reminiscent of what he intended to do what his Justice League sequel, with the team and the Darkseid story.
Zack Snyder Might Be Executing His Cancelled Justice League Plans with Rebel Moon 2
Zack Snyder‘s Rebel Moon established a new space opera featuring a group of warriors banding together to take down an authoritarian government called The Motherworld. The first film introduced audiences to an ambitious world, and while Snyder’s vision was appreciated, The film itself received negative reviews.
The film’s sequel Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, is set to hit Netflix this April, and Snyder recently teased audiences with what to expect from the film. Snyder revealed that Part 1 was setting up the foundation of the sequel and it will be a full-blown war film. The stakes have risen significantly from the first film and the director promised that it will be a thrilling sequel. He told Entertainment Weekly,
“Part Two is a war movie. We know that Noble’s alive and Belisarius has given him the task of finding his daughter and bringing her back to him at all costs. So the stakes have risen for the village from ‘hey, we want some of your grain’ to now ‘you’re harboring the most wanted fugitive in the history of the galaxy.’”
Snyder seems to have taken his plans for his potential Justice League sequel and applied them to his Rebel Moon universe. Just like Rebel Moon, Snyder’s Justice League saw a band of heroes coming together to defeat an antagonist representing a higher authoritarian figure (Steppenwolf’s role is similar to what Ed Skrein’s Noble played in Rebel Moon)
The end of the Snyder cut teased that Darkseid and his Apokolips army would come back to invade Earth, which was the direction Snyder was most likely going in a sequel. Similarly, Rebel Moon 2 also teased that Motherworld (under the orders of Belisarius) would return to Veldt to capture Sofia Boutella’s character Kora. With Snyder given free reign at Netflix, he is finally making sure that his vision comes through the screen.
Zack Snyder Calls Rebel Moon 2 An Emotional Rollercoaster
Zack Snyder is returning with the sequel to Rebel Moon titled Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. The film’s teaser promised an impending battle between the crew on Veldt and the Motherworld. Snyder recently talked to Empire about the film’s potential and the big narrative evolution the sequel has from the first film.
Snyder revealed that Part 2 is a complete war film and has more action and intensity than the first film. Additionally, he also stated that the sequel will dive deep into the characters’ backstories, and that will contribute to making the film an emotional rollercoaster. He said,
“It’s a war film, 100 per cent. It’s got way more action than the first movie, very intense and crazy action. It’s absolutely an emotional rollercoaster you’re going to be on with these cats. We discover the backstories of our heroes, and there is an interesting correlation between what’s happened to most of them to make this battle cathartic and symbolic.”
The film will see the return of Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins. Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver will be released on Netflix on April 19, 2024. Fans can catch up on the first film on the streamer itself.
