When asked if she believes the lack of ethnic diversity on television has hindered her career, the actress told The Daily Telegraph,

“I’ve been fortunate in my career, but, yes, there have been many times when I have been told my audition has been cancelled because they’re only going to see white people,” adding, “The statistics are really depressing. I remember reading some that made me think, ‘Oh, you are more likely to see an alien in a Hollywood film than an Asian woman.'”

Before stepping into showbiz to become an actress, Gemma Chan studied law at Worcester College, Oxford. However, her love for cinema led her to pursue a career in Hollywood.
