Why Emma Stone’s Character Gwen Stacy Was Canceled by MCU?

According to the book, MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, which was written by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards, Emma Stone‘s Gwen Stacy was one of several notable characters from previous Spider-Man movies who were considered for inclusion in Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield starred No Way Home.

However, these plans were ultimately scrapped, likely due to the film’s already crowded cast and complex plot. An excerpt of the book says:

“Sommers and McKenna, at various points, wrote versions of the story that incorporated Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson, and Sally Field’s Aunt May, but ultimately cut all those women when they decided that the story was already overstuffed; the only female characters with significant screen time would be Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May and Zendaya’s MJ. Because the screenplay was constantly in flux, none of the actors could read a locked script, and they joined the project based on their faith in [Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige], [Producer Amy Pascal], and director Jon Watts.”

Meanwhile, back in 2021, while appearing on MTV News, Emma Stone talked about the rumor of her potential return to the MCU and said that she was well aware of all those but she wasn’t involved.

I’m told that they went to Emma Stone, and for 72 hours, Emma Stone was looking like Sue Storm,” Sneider stated. “We’ll see if Sue Storm ends up being a true movie star role, or someone who they go to for a rising star role which is probably where it’s head.

Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four will be directed by WandaVision’s Matt Shakman from a screenplay rewritten by Josh Friedman, and slated to debut during Phase 6 of the MCU on February 14, 2025.
