Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone collaborated on three movies which include Crazy, Stupid, Love, Gangster Squad, and La La Land. But Gosling’s experience in Glenn Ficarra, John Requa’s romantic comedy was quite different.
The actor instantly developed a connection with Stone right after they met while improvising their audition for the 2011 movie Crazy, Stupid, Love. Although improvisation was a nightmare, it sure developed the much-needed connection with his co-star that helped him walk through it.
Ryan Gosling Opened Up About His First Meet With Emma Stone
Crazy, Stupid, Love is a celebrated romantic comedy but before filming the movie, Ryan Gosling was going through the nightmarish movie protocol— improvisation. However, the pain of it was somewhat decreased when he met his co-star Emma Stone. “I don’t know if you know, I mean improvise before but it can be a nightmare,” Gosling told SBIFF. “It’s just like there’s just something uncomfortable about it,” he added.
“Anyway, it’s a scary thing to do because you know especially in an audition because you don’t know your characters, you don’t know each other. You don’t know what you know, you don’t have any frame of reference for what you’re doing, what are you going to talk about it in this team. You have to create a scene in that moment and we just couldn’t shut up.”
Gosling found it easier to walk through the process with Stone. “It was just lots to talk about and you know it was very easy,” the La La Land actor said. And improvisation “just creates a connection and a scene because you’re creating it together you really have to listen to one another and you have to really be there,” he added. He also revealed that the improvisation of an entire sequence has further enhanced their connection.
Ryan Gosling Revealed One Crazy Special Thing About Emma Stone
While appreciating Stone in the Santa Barbara International Film Festival interview while she sat beside Gosling, he revealed one crazy yet special thing about Stone. “She can drink at work,” Gosling said. “And the beauty is that she seems drunk when she’s sober anyway so when she’s drunk you can’t tell,” he added.
“What Emma, I think does that I that I love that she always is looking for how this thing can also be funny it’s because she has such a great love of comedy and because her heroes are our comedians. When she’s in a dramatic scene, you know, she’s looking for the funny and it’s just you know, I’m similar and I feel like that such a, it’s a fun way to work and it’s a fun game to play and I think that that’s you know that’s unique.”
However, he concluded his appreciation for his co-star again reminding her drinking habit. “She drinks at work about that,” he added. Responding to that Stone said, “It’s just the whole time.”
