While The Elder Scrolls fans eagerly await the sixth installment of the series, they are frustrated by the long development process. Although it’s been a very long time since the release of the last main addition, Skyrim, the excitement remains as high as ever.

This is largely thanks to periodic updates from top executives like Todd Howard. Todd Howard’s latest update has excited fans who have been waiting for The Elder Scrolls 6. While the RPG may not be released soon, this development suggests it will be worth the wait.

Even though it’s been more than a decade since Skyrim was launched, Bethesda Game Studios’ director and executive producer, Todd Howard, wants the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6 to carry some traces of it.

Howard told GQ that he wants The Elder Scrolls 6 to fulfill his vision of the ultimate fantasy world simulator. He also mentioned that, given the passage of time, there are different ways to achieve this.

It’s like… I don’t want to answer, but I want to be polite. I will say that we want it to fill that role of the ultimate fantasy-world simulator. And there are different ways to accomplish that given the time that has passed.

Todd Howard also addressed the criticisms about The Elder Scrolls 6 being announced so long ago. For those who don’t know, the RPG was announced with a short trailer released at E3 2018 and has been in development ever since. However, he has no regrets about that, saying that if he had another chance, he would announce it in a more casual manner.

Unfortunately, those who complain that the game has been in development for a long time will have to wait even longer. According to industry sources, the RPG will be released for PC and Xbox Series X|S in 2026 at the earliest.

Can Elder Scrolls 6 Be as Successful as Skyrim?

Howard isn't making bold claims about whether the upcoming RPG will be as successful as the previous game.

The successful launch of The Elder Scrolls series’ fifth main installment in 2011 made it one of the legendary titles in the genre. The game received a score of 96 out of 100 from reviews on Metacritic and proved itself once again by receiving an 8.6 score from fans.

As a report released in June 2023, Skyrim has sold over 60 million copies across nearly all gaming platforms, including mobile. That’s an impressive achievement for a game that’s been out for over a decade.

According to Howard, the primary reason behind the long development of The Elder Scrolls 6 is that the studio wants to make sure they get everything right. He isn’t making bold claims about whether the game will be as successful as Skyrim; he simply hopes it will live up to the series’ legacy.
