Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise shined together at the height of their stardom in 1994 with the film Interview with the Vampire. Although they had no real animosity on set, Pitt had remarked that there was always an underlying competition getting in the way.
After not sharing the screen together, Brad Pitt would go on to star in the 2009 film Inglourious Basterds. After the filming ended, Pitt commented on Tom Cruise’s 2008 war movie while his reps denied the comment that Pitt had never seen the movie.
When Brad Pitt Insulted Tom Cruise’s War Movie
After their on-set competitiveness in Interview with the Vampire, Tom Cruise starred in the 2008 war movie titled Valkyrie. A year later, Brad Pitt joined forces with visionary director Quentin Tarantino and portrayed the role of Lt. Aldo Raine in Inglourious Basterds.
With a comparison between the two movies, both are good in their own genre. Brad Pitt decided to cross the barriers however and diss Tom Cruise’s 2008 war movie claiming to the German magazine Stern (via Digital Spy) that it was a ridiculous movie, a subtle way to reignite their 14-year-old grudge.
“It was a ridiculous movie…The Second World War could still deliver more stories and films, but I believe that Quentin put a cover on that pot”.
He further continued,
“With Basterds, everything that can be said to this genre has been said. The film destroys every symbol. The work is done, end of story”.
Well, it seems that the publicity of these comments was too much for Brad Pitt and his fame to handle since he retracted his comments later on. A representative for Pitt even went as far as to claim that “Brad has never seen Valkyrie, so this is not accurate”.
Brad Pitt Has Respect For Tom Cruise
After starring together in Interview with the Vampire, the duo of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt never worked together. Pitt, however, stated in another interview with Premiere that he had a lot of respect for Tom Cruise.
“I always thought there was this underlying competition that got in the way of any real conversation…It wasn’t nasty by any means, not at all. But it was just there and it bugged me a bit. But I’ll tell you, he catches a lot of s*** because he’s on top, but he’s a good actor and he advances in the film. He did it. I mean, you have to respect that”.
If we compare the reviews, Brad Pitt surely does win since Inglourious Basterds received a rating of 8.4/10 on IMDB while Valkyrie only had a rating of 7.1/10 on IMDB. The 2009 Brad Pitt film is available to rent on Apple TV+.
