Her work as Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man films has become one of the most beloved parts of the MCU, and her death is one of the saddest. The second film in the series certainly divides its fans to date, with some thinking it was too emotional and others finding it to not meet the Marvel standard. While opinions may vary, Stone’s thoughts on the matter may shift some fans to her side.
The Amazing Spider-Man 1 Was Restrictive
When The Amazing Spider-Man was being made, there was a lot of pressure from all sides. Following the success of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man films and with the MCU having just started, this new series had to be successful. Due to this, there was little room for error, which meant everything had to follow a strict formula.
During an interview with Huff Post, Emma Stone was asked if filming the second film was easier than the first, and she spoke about exactly this.
“The script from the very beginning was completely on point. It felt very cohesive. On the first movie there had been different opinions in different places.”
The actress revealed that when the 2012 films were being made, the script and the filming were like a puzzle.; every piece had a place, and there was a specific way things had to be. While such an approach made sure that the film was successful, it did not give the actors creative freedom.
Emma Stone Loved Working On The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Emma Stone then talked about how the second film gave them more privilege to experiment with their actors. She was able to see what approach she wanted to take with Gwen Stacy and execute it to her liking. Stone then specifically talked about her character’s arc in The Amazing Spider-Man 2
“Here, it felt like there was more freedom and more expansion. Also, this is the part of Gwen’s story I was so excited to get into. I thought they kind of executed it in a beautiful way. Executed being a very choice word [laughs]. But I thought they did that really well.”
Even though Gwen’s ending in the film is tragic, to say the least, there is no denying that the film did an excellent job with her character. She made a small nod at her character’s passing and mentioned that she loved how they handled her story in the film.
