It’s been over eight years since George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road hit the theatres, and the filmmaker subsequently shared his plans for its sequels. Starring an ensemble cast including Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, the film was received very well, earning six Oscars at the 88th Academy Awards. A prequel of the film focusing on Theron’s character Imperator Furiosa is set to hit theatres soon as well.
Along with a spin-off, the filmmaker has also shared his plans to develop further sequels of the 2015 film. Earlier in an interview with The Independent, Miller shared his plans for the film series’ future, revealing that he envisioned Mad Max: Fury Road to develop into a trilogy.
George Miller Plans to Develop Mad Max into a Trilogy
George Miller has been very open about his ideas and plans to further continue the Mad Max saga. The filmmaker has shared that they had enough story material for two more films, hinting towards a trilogy. He even revealed the working title for the sequel Mad Max: The Wasteland in an interview with The Independent.
During the interview, he also shared that while working on the 2015 film, they explored the “subtext” of the story and multiple characters, and “without really thinking about it, we wrote two other screenplays.” He further shared that Mad Max: Fury Road will be followed by two more movies.
“Somewhere, if the planets align, there will be two other films,” Miller told the outlet. The filmmaker has reaffirmed his intent to work on the franchise with three movies, a spin-off following Furiosa, portrayed by Charlize Theron in the 2015 film, and two sequels of Fury Road.
The spinoff, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, is set to release this year and follows a young Furiosa’s journey back home through the Wasteland after she gets abducted from the Green Place of Many Mothers.
Tom Hardy Confirms His Return to Mad Max Sequels
Along with George Miller, Tom Hardy has confirmed the development of two additional sequels to the 2015 film. He has also reaffirmed his commitment to the franchise, as he once revealed that he has signed to three Mad Max movies and is eagerly waiting to reprise his role as Max Rockatansky. He said,
“Yeah, as far as I’ve signed to do three of them. It’s a question of when. I’m not sure it’s called The Wasteland or not ‘cause you never know. These titles change all the time. But, there’s definitely another Mad Max project pending.”
The actor has also said that he is excited to reunite with George Miller and his co-star Charlize Theron has also expressed enthusiasm to reprise her role as Furiosa. “I would love to bring her back to life,” she told MTV before adding, “Yeah I’d love to play this woman again, definitely.”
While details regarding the plot of the Mad Max: Fury Road sequels remain undisclosed, expectations are high for further exploration of Max’s journey through the post-apocalyptic landscape, potentially delving into new revelations about the world.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is set to release on May 24, 2024.
