The 2019 blockbuster, 6 Underground, which has ‌frantic car chases, and action-packed scenes, is proof of why Michael Bay loved directing films like Bad Boys or Transformers. The thriller starring, Ryan Reynolds also explains why it can be risky (at times) for the crew to film such life-threatening scenes.

You have to give Michael Bay credit for creating action-packed films that are uniquely his. Anyone who has seen the Bad Boys or Transformers franchises will be able to identify 6 Underground as his production (just after watching around five minutes of it). However, the cast and crew reportedly faced some surprising situations while working on the action thriller.

Ryan Reynolds’ 6 Underground And Its Near-Death Experiences

The 2019 Netflix film, 6 Underground starring Ryan Reynolds, generated a lot of buzz. While both audiences and critics have praised the movie’s intense action and breathtaking visuals, there is one element that has drawn criticism: the destruction of an 800-year-old artifact in Florence, Italy.

So, the Kismet and Rome’s Cinecittà Studios were used for some Italian filming. The protracted car chase, which took place in the heart of Florence’s historic district, was shot in Siena, Rome, Taranto, and Florence itself. The scenes were filmed between August 22 and September 22, 2018. Michael Bay was successful in obtaining permission for closed streets in order to film the sped-up cars.

But, in a Vanity Fair interview, Bay expressed that he was quite surprised when Florence permitted the car chase to be filmed in its historic district.

“There’s a lot of priceless stuff in this movie. Like where we have cars flying between an obelisk. Why they allowed me to have flying cars by an obelisk that’s 800 years old, I don’t know. But we didn’t hurt anything.”

Despite these near probable misses, Bay persisted in continuing to shoot and was determined to get the best images for his film. And it appears that his determination paid off based on the movie.

In addition to some scenes in the Florence Cathedral, they pulled off stunts between buildings and cranes. The final day of principal photography was December 5, 2018. According to reports, the movie’s production cost $150 million, making it one of Netflix’s most expensive productions at the time.

Ryan Reynolds Thought He Was ‘Gonna Die’ While Shooting 6 Underground

Ryan Reynolds feared he would “die” while filming 6 Underground.

Although he loved filming the action sequences for Michael Bay’s blockbuster, the 49-year-old actor, who played One, confessed to being terrified during one particular car chase.

The Canadian-American star once told Empire magazine:

“There’s a car chase in this movie that’s unlike anything else, a ride round Florence that’s totally wild, speeding in a Day-Glo green Alfa Romeo at 150mph down narrow walkways that should never be used for anything but walking. I thought I was gonna die. Weirdly enough, it was Michael Bay’s life that flashed before my eyes. That was strange.”

The Netflix original film, 6 Underground, which centers on a group of international operatives who go undercover to eliminate infamous criminals, was released in 2019.

It seems that the creators of 6 Underground may have put too much emphasis on the film’s production value and action-loaded scenes. There is no doubt that Michael Bay is an action movie director who knows how to turn up the heat.
