The Marvel Studios finally made way for the X-Men to join the MCU and leave behind Fox, following this year’s Deadpool 3. Thereafter, fans certainly cannot wait for the new version of the X-Men to arrive in full force, especially after the critical success of X-Men ’97. Meanwhile, following fans’ excitement, Henry Zaga recently opened up about his desire to return as Sunspot in the MCU.
Previously appearing in Marvel’s 2020 horror sci-fi movie The New Mutants, Henry Zaga played the role of Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot. Although that particular film left fans disgruntled, Zaga has urged the MCU to bring back the project and its characters, for he believes, there’s a massive storyline awaiting the characters.
X-Men to Join MCU Following the Critical Success of the Franchise Projects
Although previously, when Marvel Studios first initiated their X-Men project in 2000, they had plans to turn it into a separate franchise under Fox. However, after Disney recently took over 21st Century Fox, fans had speculated that Marvel President Kevin Feige would make plans to help the X-Men join forces with the MCU.
It seems the time is finally here, as Marvel is releasing subtle hints for the X-Men to join the MCU. Considering the critical success that the X-Men projects are getting, compared to the MCU movies, it is only obvious for Kevin Feige to join the two franchises, to win over the audience base.
While Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Eternals, and even The Marvels flopped at the box office, X-Men projects soared with grace. From Logan to Deadpool films and even the recently released X-Men ’97 earned critical success and praise among fans. Therefore, capitalizing on the success of X-Men, Marvel Studios appears to be making way for the X-Men to join the MCU.
Henry Zaga Wishes for The New Mutants to Return to the MCU
Fans are certainly excited for the X-Men franchise to join forces with the MCU, but the actor who is even more eager is The New Mutants star Henry Zaga. The actor appeared as Robert da Costa aka Sunspot alongside Maisie Williams’ Wolfsbane and Anya-Taylor Joy’s Magik in the 2020 horror flick in the X-Men universe.
Further, Sunspot returned in the animated show X-Men ’97, with Gui Agustini offering the voice for the character. While Henry Zaga’s Sunspot failed miserably in winning over audiences with The New Mutants, the character in X-Men ’97 did wonders. And now since Marvel is embracing the X-Men, following the grand success of the animated show, Zaga expressed his desire to return as Sunspot.
Speaking with CoveredGeekly’s Christopher Gallardo, Henry Zaga openly admitted that he would love to return as Sunspot in the MCU, alongside his co-stars from The New Mutants. According to the interview, Zaga’s enthusiasm stems from the potential of his character and the narrative following the X-Men ’97 storyline, which he believes still has much to offer and explore.
“Of course, I would love to return to the MCU! I feel like Sunspot is such a beloved character and I absolutely love him. I think there’s still so much to explore still with that storyline. It would just be a joy to bring all those actors back together.”
Although a new ensemble of actors will likely fill important X-Men roles, once they venture into the MCU, Henry Zaga simply urged for the $29B franchise (via The Numbers) to let him reprise his role. Whether or not Zaga returns as Sunspot, his character will certainly get some redemption by joining the MCU’s version with a world of new possibilities.
