It seems that the world has developed some very different opinions in the modern day about things of the past. Colin Farrell, the Irish actor born in the 1970s, is no stranger to the character of The Penguin from DC Comics since he portrayed the role 2 years back.
Well, the character is getting his own television series titled The Penguin, and the world is excited. As per a recent report, however, Warner Bros. banned Farrell from smoking a cigar (in character, of course), and the actor had to fight because a cigar is a part of the personality of The Penguin!
Colin Farrell Had To Fight Against WB For a Cigar!
As per a recent report, it has already happened once that The Penguin wasn’t allowed to satiate his nicotine cravings. Not allowed to have a cigar in his hand during the entirety of Matt Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman, the character of The Penguin did not smoke.
Following the success of the film, a spin-off series by the name of The Penguin was soon announced with Colin Farrell reprising the role. Well, as per a recent report, it seems that Farrell did not like the banning of cigars at all and fought against Warner Bros. to include that in the television series. In his defense, The Penguin does smoke often and is usually seen with a cigar in his hand or in his mouth.

I may not be a fan of smoking, but smoking is a trademark of The Penguin himself for decades.

Even if he didn't smoke in The Batman, just by looking at him makes you think he's the kind of person who would want to smoke.

Shooting people – perfectly fine
Smoking a cigar – big no no!
The logic of these studios…— Sebastian Ganske (@sebganske) March 22, 2024
In a separate interview, the veteran actor addressed this issue and stated how the studio treated him because of his wish for a cigar. Using some truth bombs, Farrell had a really great point about The Penguin and how he wanted to stay true to his character!
When Colin Farrell Fought With The Studio
In a separate interview with Jake’s Takes, The Banshees of Inisherin star talked about how desperate he was just to complete the look of The Penguin while filming. Stating that ultimately it was the studio’s decision, Farrell had some brave words to say in the interview!
“Big studios make big decisions around such things as the presence of cigarettes in films. I fought valiantly for a cigar. At one stage I said, ‘I can have it unlit! Just let me have it unlit.’ They were like, ‘No.’ [As if] a bunch of 12-year-olds are going to start smoking Cuban cigars because [the Penguin is smoking cigars in a movie.]”
Well, the past is in the past. Colin Farrell’s The Penguin will showcase Cobblepot’s (the Penguin) rise to power and how he went from a simple man to a gangster in Gotham. The series is set for a release date in Fall 2024 and will be available to stream on Max in the U.S.
