Renowned podcaster and commentator Joe Rogan is celebrated for his frankness, a trait he maintains during conversations on his podcast. And he took the same approach when Taylor Sheridan joined him on his podcast to discuss the latter’s acclaimed Western drama, Yellowstone. The series following the Dutton family maintaining power over their vast ranch initially received mixed reviews.
However, it has since gained traction with subsequent seasons, garnering praise from both critics and audiences. In their discussion, Sheridan delved into the show’s early reception, leading Rogan to highlight the declining relevance of critics in the realm of entertainment.
Joe Rogan Questioned Critics’ Relevance in the Entertainment Industry
In an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, the Yellowstone creator reflected on the negative reviews surrounding the show. He admitted that critics might have initially disliked the show as it was “designed for them to hate.”
While he was not surprised by the reception, Sheridan also highlighted that despite opening up to negative reviews, the show has managed to gain so much popularity, leaving critics puzzled by its success. “They can’t get their heads around why it’s successful,” he told the show host, who offered his intake, expressing skepticism towards the influence and accuracy of critics’ assessments.
Joe Rogan said,
“Critics are less relevant today than at any time in human history… They’re off so much more than they’re on… and most people don’t buy into it at all.”
They further discussed the disconnect between critics’ opinions and audience reception, citing examples like Dave Chappelle’s comedy specials and Sheridan’s own show, Mayor of Kingstown. Rogan also expressed his frustration with critics’ seeming disconnect from popular opinion.
“Who are these people that are critics?” he questioned before adding, “I just don’t understand why they’re still employed.” Taylor Sheridan, however, suggested that critics’ tendency to impose modern moral standards to evaluate every project could be the reason for the disconnect between their views and those of the audience.
Taylor Sheridan’s 1883 Received High Acclaim from Joe Rogan
Joe Rogan also shared his perspective on Sheridan’s work on the Western drama and its spin-offs, 1923 and 1883. He recounted his introduction to Sheridan’s work with the 2016 film Hell or High Water before delving into the Western drama, Yellowstone.
Rogan shared that his friend Andrew Schulz recommended the show to him. While he shared that he loved all the shows, including the spin-offs 1923 and 1883, he particularly appreciated Sheridan’s work on the latter.
“Yellowstone is f**king great, but 1923 is better, but 1883, holy sh*t,” he said, stating that he became engrossed in the series. He praised the show’s creator for capturing the essence of different periods, remarking that no other portrayal comes close to capturing the essence of the time periods as Sheridan does.
Yellowstone is available to stream on Prime Video.
