While most people conceive Adam Sandler as the comedy star who excels in slapstick comedies and hilarious rom-coms, his dramatic chops as an actor often go underappreciated. Time and time again, The Meyerowitz Stories Star has put his dramatic chops on full display, with his most notable work being 2019’s Uncut Gems, which many argued should’ve earned Sandler an Oscar nod.
Since then, the actor has continued to take on more dramatic roles, with his recent release being Spaceman, which brought in a whole new challenge for the Hustle Star that pushed his boundaries.
Spaceman Pushed Adam Sandler’s Physical Capabilities to the Limit
In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays an astronaut named Jakub, who spends six months on a solitary research mission at the edge of the solar system. While Sandler had no problems showcasing his dramatic chops in the sci-fi drama starring Paul Dano and Carey Mulligan, it was the physical work associated with the role that took the heaviest toll on him. The Hustle Star recalled that working with the stunt wires on was a painful experience as flexibility wasn’t his strong suit, but the stuntmen that tied him to the wires weren’t convinced he was in any pain.
He said (via Deadline):
“My body’s not the most flexible. The wires hurt me and dug into me,” he said. “The stuntmen who would wire me up every day, I would tell them it hurts but they didn’t believe me.”
Despite the issues, Sandler and the whole crew pulled through, with the actor stating, “We did it. We did it as a team,” and the Spanglish Star couldn’t be prouder of his work.
Adam Sandler Is Down for More Dramatic Projects in the Future
While Spaceman involved some of the most physical works that Adam Sandler had to pull off, the actor cherished the challenge, expressing that it was an amazing time filming the sci-fi drama. Further raving about the film, the Funny People Star revealed that he is down to working on more great dramas with the film’s director Johan Renck.
“Yes. I loved doing the Spaceman. It was an amazing process. I just love the movie. I love watching it. It’s beautiful. It sounds amazing. So if another great movie comes around… maybe Johan [Renck, the film’s director] will invite us all to do another good one.”
With Adam Sandler hitting it out of the park with his recent releases, fans will expect the actor to keep on tackling more versatile projects and let his acting wings spread.
Spaceman will premiere on Netflix on 23 February.
