One major change in Ant-Man 3 from the first two movies and Avengers: Endgame was the new Cassie Lang. Not only did the actress change from Abby Ryder Fortson and Emma Fuhrmann to Kathryn Newton, but the character also changed from a daddy-loving girl to a teenage rebel. Newton is now opening up about the prospect of returning to the MCU, and it’s not all good news for fans.
Marvel’s rationale behind recasting Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was to feature a more recognizable star in the role. The move made sense as Cassie Lang is expected to play a prolonged role in the MCU, appearing alongside the Young Avengers.
Ant-Man 3 Star Kathryn Newton Has No Confirmation About Her MCU Return
In the final scenes of The Marvels, Iman Vellani‘s Kamala Khan meets up with Hailee Steinfeld‘s Kate Bishop to discuss the possibility of forming the Young Avengers. One major shout-out was given to Cassie Lang as Khan mentions putting out a “feeler” to Ant-Man’s daughter. When Kathryn Newton appeared for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she was asked about her “future friend” Vellani’s mention of her character in the film.
Newton revealed that she was given the heads-up about the exciting Young Avengers news before the film’s release. She was further asked if she was aware of the possibility of being a Young Avenger when she signed up for the role. The Freaky actress responded that she always hoped for that possibility. Newton grew up watching Iron Man movies and wanted to provide the young audience members with a similar next-generation hero, in this case, Stinger.
While she would readily accept an opportunity from Marvel, she revealed that the studio hasn’t informed her about any plans for her return. The Detective Pikachu actress revealed that Marvel provided her with an overall picture, and she doesn’t take such information for granted. Newton will now focus on her other projects until the MCU calls her for the role, an opportunity she would eagerly embrace. Newton shared with THR:
“It’s such a big part of my life. But they don’t really tell you. They tell you an overall, but I don’t take anything for granted. I am just trying to get through the day. Let’s finish one movie and then let’s continue. But I would very much also jump at the opportunity to work with Marvel Studios again.”
While Kathryn Newton is uncertain about her return, her co-star Jonathan Majors was fired from the MCU following a guilty conviction in a domestic violence case involving his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. Majors played Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man 3.
Kathryn Newton’s Character Received Criticism In Ant-Man 3
Kathryn Newton has excelled in most of her previous significant roles, such as her portrayal of Reese Witherspoon‘s daughter in Big Little Lies. However, when it came to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, her performance fell short of expectations. Fans and critics don’t blame her, as they unanimously agree that she was given subpar material to work with.
Besides the poorly conceived characterization in Ant-Man 3, some fans strongly resonated with Emma Fuhrmann‘s emotional scene in Avengers: Endgame. This has made it challenging for this group to support the decision to recast the role. However, some also acknowledge that even Fuhrmann couldn’t have saved the disaster of a script that was Ant-Man 3.
