Obsidian’s Avowed Takes This One Feature From Fallout and Makes it Even Better

Avowed’s companion system is better than Fallout | Steam

One of the most crucial things in Fallout‘s brutal world is the importance of friendship. Bethesda has incorporated this aspect into the gameplay of Fallout games with its companion mechanic. What this system does is it allows you to have an NPC accompany you in the post-apocalyptic wasteland.

While it’s an incredibly useful system in the Fallout franchise, it comes with its own share of problems. There’s a chance that Bethesda might improve on the feature in the next Fallout game, but we’re in for a long haul. However, Obsidian has already implemented a similar system in its upcoming Avowed game that will completely revolutionize how we interact with NPCs.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Avowed game directors Carrie Patel and gameplay director Gabe Paramo discussed their upcoming project in depth. While discussing the game’s core philosophy, Paramo touched upon various aspects and mechanics of the game, including the companion system.

They have some active combat abilities; you can kind of see what they’re doing in the video. Then there’s more player-driven abilities that the player can access as well. And [they’re] somewhat like an extension of the player in terms of how we wanted to present that – it’s still tied to that singular ability button.

In Avowed, players will have tons of companions to adventure with, with some of them resembling popular characters such as Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy. These NPCs will follow you into combat and help you fight against the various challenges you’ll encounter in the game. That’s not all; they’ll come with tons of abilities for players to deploy, and players will be able to level them up.

It’s not the first time Obsidian Entertainment has taken inspiration from Bethesda’s titles. The studio’s boss once revealed that they looked into Skyrim for inspiration with Avowed.

When is Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed Releasing?

It’s a known fact that Obsidian has always been a studio that manages to punch above its weight with amazing RPGs such as South Park: The Stick of Truth and classic games such as Fallout: New Vegas. While players wait for a sequel to the Outer Worlds 2, the team is taking on its biggest challenge with the upcoming Avowed.

Obsidian Entertainment previously confirmed that Avowed will debut sometime in autumn 2024. This means the RPG title could be released between September and November 2024.

With Obsidian now owned by Microsoft, Avowed will be an Xbox and PC exclusive. However, with Microsoft experimenting with bringing Xbox exclusives to other platforms, there’s a chance that Avowed could eventually make its way to the PlayStation console.
