Helldivers 2 is a boon to Sony’s PlayStation as it has kept the players across the globe hooked to the console. On the contrary, its rival, Xbox, is growing weaker than ever amid the already shaken gaming market. Microsoft’s head of gaming, Phil Spencer, has recently confirmed that there will be a new console at some point in the future. It should bring the company in a better position He also confirmed this during the Official Xbox Podcast. Meanwhile, Sony is eyeing on PS5 Pro release.
PlayStation’s foray dates back to 1994 while the first Xbox console came after seven years. Early market entry is among various reasons why the former outperforms the latter as it established itself before Microsoft entered gaming. Where sales are concerned, PS is way ahead of Xbox currently.
Helldivers 2 Adds Salt to the Wound
It was supposed to be a big year for Xbox after it teased games like Avowed, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, and more. However, crumbling sales are just adding to the disaster. Then came Helldivers 2, adding salt to the injury. The game has sold around 8 Million copies already. Players have gone eager beavers, asking the company to bring the game to Xbox. But Sony ain’t listening, prompting them into thinking that they should just jump on the PS bandwagon.
February 2024 sales were a disaster in contrast to PlayStation. Interestingly, Helldivers 2 came in the same month. PS5 outsold Xbox by nearly a two-to-one margin. While Sony’s console hit 430K units sold in the month, Microsoft’s was seen around 70K. Looking at the lifetime sales, while PS5 may not be on the top, it is way ahead of Xbox Series X and S.
Xbox Game Pass though, is currently the most potent weapon Microsoft is holding with 34 Million subscribers currently. However, the growth might not be what it seems. The number includes users from its Xbox Live Gold days, a name that serves as a new dress on the same body.
Hopefully, Xbox Game Pass Will Not Be The Only Thing Holding Up The Vessel
We never know what the future holds but it doesn’t seem like Xbox will overshadow Sony’s PlayStation overnight. Some speculations suggested that the company is moving out of the hardware business. However, it is unlikely after the plans revealed by Microsoft executives during the Official Xbox Podcast.
One thing that Microsft’s gaming division executed boldly was its decision to bring Xbox exclusives on different platforms. While it will give them exposure to larger audiences, it is likely to breathe new life into its gaming division.
As gaming will be entering the next generation of consoles, it also holds an opportunity to create something great that may outshine its rivals. In fact, the next Xbox console might be nearer than we think.
