Movies being re-released is a new trend in Hollywood these days. And quite a few studios are getting in line to bring back their old gems for theatrical releases for the current audience. While it may have seemed fun for a while, things might get a bit out of hand soon.
Showings of old movies is not a new concept, with many theatres having shows of old movies from time to time. Similarly, the concept of drive-through or showings in the park is also not a new idea. But re-releasing movies by the studios is becoming a trend now.
Studios to Re-release Alien and The Mummy in Theaters This Weekend
Movies from a couple decades ago haven’t been watched by the audience of today’s generation in theaters. Which is why, studios have found a way to bring in more audience by re-releasing old classics. This is a win-win for both the viewers as well as the producers. The audiences get to relive those classic moments in theatres again, or enjoy a first-time experience. Whereas the studios are getting their dough.
Movies like Spider-Man 2 and The Phantom Menace were recently re-released. And now, for the coming weekend, Alien and The Mummy is being re-released in theatres. James Cameron re-released Titanic on its 25th anniversary last year, along with a documentary. And Warner Bros. Discovery is currently gearing up to re-release the Lord of the Rings trilogy in 4k in theatres this summer.
But the question is, while the nostalgia might work in favor of all these re-released projects, how long will it be before audiences get bored of these profit tactics?
Audience Can See Through Studio’s Cash Grab Tactics of Re-releasing Movies
The re-released movies bring a feeling of nostalgia for the viewers, and it is really amazing to get to enjoy these movies on the big screen once more. But with how studios have now made it into a trend to milk more money out of the audience, they have begun to see through this.
A few years ago, it was the era of superheroes, with Marvel and DC releasing new movies every year. Now that superhero fatigue has caught up to them, this new trend of re-releasing old movies has started. Is this because studios do not have fresh new projects to release or is it something else?
