Renner has been a staple member of the Avengers since 2012, and his portrayal of Clint Barton was beloved and praised by fans, so it is quite difficult to imagine another actor stepping into the role. Still, some fans have got a comment about his casting.

Marvel Fans Think Jeremy Renner Was Miscast As Hawkeye

A Marvel fan from Reddit called FTL2410 responded to a thread on the most miscast character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and wrote:

Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton. Don’t get me wrong I think he could have actually played the character as he is in the comics however because of his age I feel like they rewrote him a lot to be something he really isn’t. I would have preferred a significantly younger Clint, especially since he was barely used so even after a couple years he still would have been fine.”

Another user named Aubergine_Man1987 replied to the comment and said, “He’s based on Ultimates Barton rather than 616 Barton,” and the original poster answered, “Even so they treat him more like an ‘Old Man Clint’ then either Ultimate or 616.”

Ultimates saw Clint Barton become a colleague and friend of Agent Nick Fury. They established the modern intelligence agency S.H.I.E.L.D. and served as the key founders. When Fury became the director, Barton, later code-named Hawkeye, rose through his rank and became an elite agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s black ops division. He often worked with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow.

Another Redditor named froggerslogger gave the same answer and nominated Jeremy Renner as the most miscast role in MCU. The comment reads:

I think Renner was miscast as Hawkeye. Or maybe he was cast fine if the MCU was the Ultimates and not the 616 Avengers, but he and his character didn’t approach the 616 Hawkeye that I would have preferred… I think Renner is good as the spy/assassin they chose to go with, but I think that was a subpar choice for the character. Ultimates Hawkeye sucks compared to 616 Hawkeye.”

The fan lamented how MCU’s version of Hawkeye was not anything like Captain America, and noted that Barton has got “more of an edge than Cap, and a temper, but he’s a genuinely good person who tries to make up for a spotty past.”

Even Jeremy Renner hesitated to take on the role of Hawkeye because he was concerned about wearing superhero costumes in his 50s. He shared in an interview with Vanity Fair how he spoke with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and talked about the Ultimates version of Hawkeye:

Iron Man had come out, and I said, ‘I’m into what you guys are doing because I loved Iron Man. I like how you made Iron Man plausible.’ So that’s where they wanted to go with [Hawkeye]. I’m like, ‘Great!’ You gotta kinda sign on for a bunch of Avengers films and potential Hawkeye films, kind of sign your life away. I’m like, ‘Wait, I might be 50 in tights.’

At least, even in his 50s, Renner is not wearing tights like other MCU superheroes. In fact, his outfit is one of the most practical costumes in the films and the series.
