Fallout 3 player @bear798 posted a video on YouTube talking about these weird creatures. The user also added,

They were human at one point

This is because, through the various Alien captive recorded logs, it can be deduced that the abominations were humans, who were captured by the aliens and injected with alien DNA to turn them into biological weapons.

Fallout player @KairuExplores also agrees with the experiments on humans theory and posted on X,

Moreover, as stated by the YouTuber, these enemies have now become a nightmare for the Fallout players. This is because after undergoing the bizarre experiment, these creatures turned into violent and ferocious beings, who will attack anyone who is not one of them.

When these weird enemies spot a target, they first point toward it and let out a loud howl. They then quickly move toward the target and attack them in a similar fashion to demons or ghouls. They try to use a combination of swinging and using their claws when attacking a target.

However, the Abominations are standard enemies in the game, and players can eliminate them using alien weapons. After killing them, players can collect conventional alien items from their bodies. Sometimes they also carry unconventional items such as cigarettes, money, and other objects commonly carried by humans. This in turn further supports the theory of they being humans once.
