Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon or Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, released on Netflix in 2023, generated polarizing reactions among critics and audiences. As its second installment is waiting for its release this month, Snyder has stated that the R-rated cuts of both films look like different films in themselves. However, the fans don’t look so happy about the idea of an intentional Director’s Cut.
In the past, Zack Snyder has released extended cuts for his DCEU projects- Batman v. Superman and Justice League. The films turned out to be superior to their original versions. In an interview with the New York Times, Snyder stated that almost all of his movies have a director’s cut.
Zack Snyder promises that the R-rated Rebel Moon cuts will have no limits
Rebel Moon was initially developed as an R-rated Star Wars project. After being rejected by Lucasfilm and Disney, Zack Snyder joined hands with Netflix to develop the project as a double feature. While Netflix pushed the Man of Steel director to divide the films into two parts, Snyder added that he would be also developing Director’s Cuts for the films.
In an interview with UNILAD, before the release of the second part titled The Scargiver, Zack Snyder added that the upcoming R-rated cuts are more than just Director’s Cuts. To him, they are almost like different movies.
“The way I like to talk about it is that I think the two cuts that are coming are almost like alternative universe cuts more than an extended version. Like we call it the Director’s Cut. But they’re just like another movie.”
The filmmaker has revealed that the extended cuts are entirely different in their tonality and dialogues, and feature intense gore and nudity that is not usually seen in big-budget sci-fi ventures.
“We planned it while we were shooting, you know, we actually photographed the actors saying different dialogue… The tone of the film changes tremendously, because it’s more over the top in like, and purposely over the top [in terms of] the s*x and violence.”
While it was clear that Netflix and Zack Snyder took this approach of making the films in two different versions for the PG-13 audience and the adults to tap into a larger viewership, it raised a mixed response. Despite some fans being genuinely interested in the different cuts, numerous came forward to criticize this approach.
The fans take over the internet to criticize Zack Snyder
Zack Snyder has repeatedly stated that the R-rated cuts for his Rebel Moon go hard on gore and nudity. They are entirely different from the Netflix cuts. Earlier, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the R-rated cut of the first film will not drop before the second part hits Netflix on April 19.
Regardless, it seems like the poor reception to the first film has made the audience more skeptical about the upcoming film and the R-rated approach. They wanted a single definitive cut to be released. Take a look at some of the tweets.
This seems like a really expensive and inefficient way to make movies

It just seems like a very odd use of resources to essentially make two of the same movie at the same time. Hes purposely going into it making one an inferior version? It doesn't make sense.

So zack snyder now makes only cuts of movies

such an odd decisions to make two cuts of the movie. The pg-13 version is beyond laughable. Hopefully the R rated can save it, if it ever releases.

Zack Snyder has stated that the second installment of Rebel Moon will be heavier on action than Part One. It is hoped that the Sofia Boutella starrer will generate a better response from the sequel. On the other hand, like most other Snyder films, it is interesting to find out if the R-rated cuts provide a better version of the projects to the audience.
Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver will premiere on April 19, 2024 on Netflix.
