If you have been a fan of Cavill as Superman, it is impossible that you would not know about Justice League’s infamous Mustachegate. And in a recent appearance, while promoting three of his upcoming films with Lionsgate studios, Cavill himself poked a bit of fun at the controversial incident.

Henry Cavill is one of the finest actors of his generation if not the whole lot. Known for being humble and down-to-earth, Cavill often has some or the other quirky remarks, an ability that fans so dearly love.

The actor recently turned up at the CinemaCon being held at Caesars Palace during Lionsgate Studio’s presentation of his upcoming projects with the studio. Starring in Highlander, and two Guy Ritchie movies: The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and In the Grey, the actor looked as great as ever.

Adam Fogelson, the group chair for the event, asked the now clean-shaven Cavill if there was any facial hair that did not look good on him, referring to his glorious beard in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. And Cavill cheekily replied while poking fun at his mustachegate from Zack Snyder‘s Justice League (via THR).

“We’ve tried a few… [Facial hair is] not my usual thing, aside from a controversial mustache early in my career.”

The said controversial mustache was a result of scheduling conflicts between Mission: Impossible — Fallout and reshoots for Justice League after Joss Whedon took over from Snyder. And has since become one of the most controversial DC incidents of all time.

Beard or no beard, Henry Cavill looks good in everything. Yet Justice League not only ended up being one of the most disliked DC movies but also received tons of flak for how they ruined Henry Cavill’s face, a feat that at the time seemed impossible.

After Zack Snyder left the DC project (via THR), Joss Whedon ended up helming the movie and thus, reshoots followed. However, by the time reshoots were taking place, Cavill was busy shooting Mission: Impossible — Fallout, which required him to have a mustache.

Even though there were some negotiations, things did not work out (see AV Club), and the DC film instead had to rely on CGI to remove Cavill’s mustache. As soon as the mustachegate went viral, fans created heaps of memes on the controversial yet hilarious incident (via USA Today).

Even Cavill joined in the fun twice and posted on his Instagram, trying to put an end to the seemingly inexorable conquest of his despotic ‘stache. In another video, he called it King Stach and paid tribute to it.

While Justice League can be streamed on Max, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare hits theatres this Friday, April 19, 2024.
