The second season of HBO’s House of the Dragon is set to release in the summer of 2024, two years after the first season aired. The prequel to the iconic Game Of Thrones which details the origins of the mighty Targaryen dynasty, was one of the most anticipated shows with a huge reputation to sustain. While comparisons with Game Of Thrones was inevitable, House of the Dragon was largely a success.
Along with the expectations around season 2’s release, HBO head Casey Bloys also confirmed that the storyline for season 3 was also being locked into place. Bloys believed author George R.R. Martin’s extensive narrative spanning over many years, warranted a planned effort that would do justice to his vision.
House of the Dragon Already Has Season 3 In Sight
House of the Dragon based on novelist George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, will resume for a second season in the summer of 2024. The HBO series though, is already looking way ahead by envisioning various narrative threads for a 3rd season. In an interview with Variety following the Emmy Awards, HBO chief Casey Bloys detail the reasoning behind this decision.
“They’re talking about it. One of the things is because it’s all based on George R.R. Martin’s history, they have to map it out pretty carefully season by season. So, they are starting to talk about the stories they want to tell in Season 3.”
While the Game Of Thrones saga was set within an 8-year time period, George R.R Martin covered much more ground in House of the Dragon. This led to season one sweeping across 30 years with few episodes leaping a good 10 years forward. With the confirmation that season 2 will focus primarily on the Targaryen civil war, the 3rd installment could move ahead by a significant number of years to possibly tackle Aegan’s conquest.
House of The Dragon Season 2 Will Have Fewer Episodes
Following the promising reception that House of the Dragon received in its debut season, George R.R. Martin revealed in a blog that the show would need 10 episodes and 4 full seasons to do justice to the vast narrative. But it seems that HBO and show runner Ryan Condal have other plans which includes maintaining the hype by making a few key modifications to the show as it enters its second season.
One of these changes involves cutting the series from its original 10-episode length to 8 episodes. According to sources, this decision was purely a story-driven one and not influenced by cost concerns. While the number of seasons that the show may run for is also not confirmed, reports suggest that the ultimate goal is to find the best way to break up the stories that span over multiple years. The change in the number of episodes could also be a result of the feedback received for the 7th and 8th seasons of Game of Thrones which had only 7 and 6 episodes respectively.
