The world of gaming comprising Helldivers 2, Valorant, Elden Ring, and many more titles constitutes a major chunk of the entertainment industry as a whole. Recent decades have also seen immense growth in not only the audience but also the production quality of these video games, resulting in various genres that have been curated such as open-world, first-person shooters, and multiplayer.
However, none would have been possible without the pioneer games that were way ahead of their times. The first ever Doom, a game that came out back in 1993 would be a perfect example of the same, as it brought a revolution to the industry no other title was able to bring at the time.
Why Games Like Helldivers 2 And Others Owe Their Success To The First Ever Doom Title
Games, particularly first-person shooters, and multiplayer titles, inherit different foundational elements that were introduced by Doom more than 3 decades ago. In an industry valued at $282 billion in 2024, with new releases like Helldivers 2 emerging nearly every single week, these elements serve as the cause for their success.
When we particularly focus on the multiplayer aspect, Doom was one of the first-ever video game titles to include an FPS deathmatch mode, a term which was coined by John Romero, the creator of the game himself. It helped pave the way for the absolute domination of multiplayer games that have started in recent times.
Deathmatch is a feature that has been exclusively added to a lot of franchises over time, including Call of Duty, Valorant, Counter-Strike, and the aforementioned Helldivers 2. Talking about the significance of the game he has created, Romero revealed in an interview last year his thoughts about the legacy of the game.
John Romero Reveals His Thoughts On The Legacy Of Doom
In an interview via GamesBeat, the creator of the game disclosed his thoughts about how the game introduced various elements such as fragging, deathmatch, speedrunning, mods, and free-to-play to the world of gaming. Romero mentioned-
“We were so fortunate to be able to put all this stuff in one game. A lot of places over the years, different articles have highlighted all of those things that were done at one time. But now articles are coming out saying things like, “This game’s importance can’t be overestimated, because of all the things it did all presented.”
As Romero highlighted, the importance of the game cannot be simply understood in words, as it has played a huge role in founding the elements of the games that are popular today. The legacy of the franchise from then has been carried on by several installments, including the majorly successful Doom Eternal that came out in 2020.
The release of Helldivers 2 last month has proved to be a triumph at the same time. The game produced by Arrowhead Studios has unexpectedly blown up as it offers a fun co-op experience that fans have been longing for a long time.
Unfortunately, the game also suffers from an influx of cheaters, causing the community to be divided within themselves as they allegedly believe players from a singular nation are responsible for ruining the experience of others.
Helldivers 2 is available to purchase on Steam.
