Potterheads are always eager to know behind-the-scenes stories about the Harry Potter franchise because there are always many rumors about it. Even there was one rumor that the lead actor Daniel Radcliffe liked to disagree with. It is said that Radcliffe broke more than 100 wands throughout the series, but that’s not true, and he strongly disputes these claims.

Daniel Radcliffe Only Broke a Dozen of Wands

There is a misconception that Daniel Radcliffe broke over 100 wands while filming the Harry Potter movies because he used them as drumsticks. But this is not true, and even Radcliffe got the opportunity to clear up a misconception in an interview with WIRED.

Promoting his new show Miracle Workers, Radcliffe appeared in a video for which he answered a series of questions autogenerated by Google. One of the questions was about the number of wands that Radcliffe broke in the movies. The actor says that he has seen claims of him breaking as many as 100 wands in the Harry Potter movies, but in reality, it was a few — only around 12 or a maximum of 20. Radcliffe declared:

He then went on to say:

“There is a thing that I sometimes see on Twitter – that’s like, when I’m going on it to not have one but look at other people’s – [an] amazing fact or weird trivia thing will pop up, and it’ll be like, ‘Daniel Radcliffe broke a hundred wands, or like sixty wands, on set.’ It’s not that many, guys. I used to like, use them and drum on my leg with it the whole time… and eventually, you know, you sort of wear them down, and they will break. But yeah, it wasn’t as many as that. I feel like everyone got through a few. And I was probably 12… maximum, absolute maximum of 20.”

Yes right! Now, it is clear that Radcliffe did not break 100 wands throughout the franchise.

Why Did Daniel Radcliffe Break the Wands Throughout the Harry Potter Series?

Evidently, Radcliffe broke a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 20 wands. So, the question is why he had to even break the wands (the object through which a witch or wizard channels his or her magic)? To this, the actor stated:

“The wands I broke a lot because I would just like drum on my legs with it all the time, so, once every three or four weeks, it would weaken to the point where it just snapped. So, I would say I was very sorry to the prop master, and he would give me a look like, ‘Please stop drumming.”

So, if Daniel Radcliffe broke somewhere between 12 and 20 wands, then he broke around one or two per movie, which probably isn’t too much.
