Justice League was one of the highly-anticipated movies of 2017, though a series of unfortunate events took place during its production that it got caught up in so many delays and changes, ultimately losing its charm and the original vision for the project.
Zack Snyder originally helmed the film, but due to a family tragedy, he had to leave everything in the hands of Joss Whedon. Fans knew by now that it was not the smartest decision, though there was no other choice at the time. Had things turned out differently for Snyder and Justice League, fans would have had the long-overdue sequel.
Justice League Actor Revealed Zack Snyder Was Prepping For A Follow-Up Movie
After Zack Snyder released his own version of the four-hour-long Justice League film in 2021, many fans speculated a sequel would be on its way. Given the strong approval and high praise it received from fans and critics, it only makes sense to continue the story.
The follow-up movie has been teased before by J.K. Simmons, who played Commissioner Jim Gordon, in a 2017 interview with Total Film magazine via Cosmic Book News:
“Well, Commissioner Gordon wears a trench coat in every scene, so I don’t know that the ‘pumped up’ part is going to be all that evident, especially when you’re standing next to Batman! But this is the first Justice League movie – we hope – of a few.”
The actor revealed that the script for the next Justice League movie was already being written at the time. He also shared a bit about his character in the movie:
“They’re working on scripts for The Batman and for the next Justice League movie. It introduces my incarnation of Commissioner Gordon. I don’t have a lot to do. I feel like I just dipped my toe in the water of who Commissioner Gordon will be.”
Of course, Warner Bros and James Gunn’s DC Studios will not be developing the rumored Justice League sequel. They have previously announced that the studio is no longer interested in continuing any of the Snyderverse movies.
What Was The Original Justice League 2 About?
In an interview with The New York Times, Zack Snyder revealed his original idea for the Justice League sequels. It was sort of similar to the plot of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame where it involved defeated heroes and an epic finale saved by time travel:
“It’s the fall of Earth when Superman succumbs to Anti-Life. And then sending Flash back in time to change one element so that doesn’t happen. And then the big battle where we beat him. When Darkseid comes to Earth, in the movie that you’ll never see, the armies of Earth all unite again, as they did before.”
His ambitious plan would unite different worlds in one film, a spectacular sight that fans would be very excited to witness on the big screen:
“This time there would be aircraft carriers and Special Forces guys, all the armies of the world would come together, as well as Atlanteans rising out of the ocean and the Themyscirans coming off their island. That was our big finale. But it’s a long drum roll and guitar solo to get there.”
The sequel to the ill-fated Justice League has long been a plan for Snyder, though fans have to wait for the director’s announcement once he decides to resurrect the franchise and pursue this journey in the near future.
