However, this surprising on-screen reunion of Krasinski and Blunt has been receiving an unexpected backlash from fans ever since its trailer debut merely 24 hours ago. Totally different and surprisingly interesting is how many would describe John Krasinski‘s latest movie IF. Starring Emily Blunt as well, Krasinski wrote and made the movie keeping his kids in mind. Based up on imaginary friends called ‘IFs’, it focuses on a young girl called Bea (played by Cailey Fleming) who can see everyone’s imaginary friends.

She teams up with the Man Upstairs (played by Ryan Reynolds) to help the IFs find new friends aka kids after their creators have outgrown them. While the trailer looks promising, the movie has been receiving severe backlash lately. Many took to X to state how the movie seems ‘horrible‘ and similar to Inside Out, which also features an imaginary friend called Bing Bong, kind of similar to IF’s main lead Blue.

Furthermore, others allege the movie’s storyline looks similar and almost ‘plagiarised’ from the popular Cartoon Network show Foster’s Home for Imaginary Children. The series was based on the same concept where all imaginary friends were sent to an orphanage until they could be adopted by new kids. Moreover, other fans feel Blue looks like the live-action version of Oh from the animated children’s movie Home.

While fans have their own theories about the movie, even though it hasn’t been released yet, John Krasinski revealed the movie is solely based on the ‘incredible world of child psychology‘.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, John Krasinski stated that for a long time, he had wanted to create something for his two daughters since his A Quite Place film series isn’t exactly a kid’s film. The actor, writer, and director spent a lot of time researching imaginary friends and kids’ psychology while keeping his kids at the center of the whole process.

“It’s the first time my kids have been a part of the process. So I got to talk to them very openly about, ‘I’m doing this because I see you guys having tea parties with no one, and it seems like you’re having a blast — who’s at that tea party and where is my invite?’ And they loved it.”

Describing it as an amazing experience, The Office star stated that he felt extremely nervous watching the trailer along with his two kids.

IF will hit the theatres on May 17, 2024.
