Despite rap icon Drake winning five prestigious Grammy awards in the past, he slammed the award-giving body in a post and questioned its relevance. Many artists in the hip-hop world aim to become as popular as him, but he tells his fellow artists that awards are just the opinions of a few people and not the entire truth.
He criticized the Grammys after three of his songs with 21 Savage were nominated for four categories, but also after the blunder that happened with the Grammys announcing Nicki Minaj as the winner for Barbie World as the Best Rap Song and later deleted the post.
Drake Rants About Grammys’ Transparency Amid Nicki Minaj Controversy
In an Instagram story post, Drake expressed his disappointment at the Grammy Awards and told his fellow singers and rappers that they should not let the opinions of a group veiled in secrecy tell them what success should look like.
“All you incredible artists remember this show isn’t the facts it’s just the opinion of a group of people who’s name are kept a secret (literally you can google it). Congrats to anybody winning anything for hip hop but this show doesn’t dictate sh*t in our world.”
Likewise, what happened to Trinidadian-born rapper Nicki Minaj was a huge embarrassment. In an unfortunate turn of events, those watching the premiere ceremony streaming live on the Academy’s YouTube channel saw that “Scientists & Engineers” by Killer Mike was the winner.
Recording Academy mistakenly posted Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice‘s Barbie World from the Barbie soundtrack as the winner before immediately taking it down. The deleted post has already been screenshotted by a number of fans and has since circulated the social media.
This has gained a lot of negative reactions from netizens, with many speculating that the Grammys was plotting against the rapper. Minaj and Ice Spice have not publicly responded to the said tweet, and the Recording Academy has not made any comment regarding the mistake.
Minaj has been nominated for 12 Grammys from 2011 to 2024, and it’s a surprise that she has never won any despite her music trending globally and transcending barriers. Indeed, Drake’s message to the Grammys was absolutely on point.
Nicki Minaj Slammed Grammys For Continuously Snubbing Her Music
Drake is not the only artist to speak up against the Grammy Awards. In 2020, Nicki Minaj also dissed the award-giving body on Twitter for snubbing her on the best new artist award despite the fact that she had 7 songs on the Billboard charts.
“Never forget the Grammys didn’t give me my best new artist award when I had 7 songs simultaneously charting on billboard & bigger first week than any female rapper in the last decade- went on to inspire a generation. They gave it to the white man Bon Iver.”
With Nicki Minaj and Drake expressing their dissatisfaction against the Grammys, more and more artists realize that the true success and essence of music are defined by the appreciation of fans and not by the trophies won.
