Hideo Kojima’s review of Dune: Part Two might be the best compliment the Denis Villeneuve movie received. The film managed to change the perspective of the world-famous video game designer in favor of theatrical movies. Kojima was completely blown off by the unprecedented detail and realism in the film. He went on to claim that films like Dune 2 will delay the subscription services from altering the cinematic experience forever.
Dune: Part Two crushed Oppenheimer‘s opening weekend collection, grossing $178 million. The big-budget film also marked the biggest domestic debut ever since Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour film with a collection of $81.5 million (via Variety).
Hideo Kojima’s Dune: Part Two Review Calls The Film A “Resistance”
Hideo Kojima, the renowned designer of Metal Gear video games, has a few positive thoughts after watching Denis Villeneuve‘s epic sequel film, Dune: Part Two. Kojima is also a known movie buff and has expressed his opinions about world cinema on his social accounts. The video game designer destroyed Sony’s latest release Madame Web, when he posted a simple six-word comment for the film, saying that he watched the film.
Not only did Dune: Part Two leave him immensely satisfied, but it also changed his perspective on theatrical cinema. He opened his review on his X page, sharing that he was beginning to lean towards streamers for watching movies even as a cinema lover. However, Villeneuve’s magical world of Arrakis, created with unprecedented detail and realism, crumbled Kojima’s perspective like sand.
For Kojima, the film shouted, “This is cinema!”, as the film did wonders with its portrayal of love and revolution. He added that both the destruction and aestheticism of the film are shown in beautiful layers. Kojima shared that the film will serve as a resistance against the spread of streaming services, which is changing the landscape of cinema. This is perhaps the best comment the film could have received from any movie buff. Kojima’s review read:
Even as a movie buff, I was beginning to think it was time for me to start watching movies on my smartphone or tablet. However, when I watched "Dune: Part 2”, my rigid ways of thinking crumbled like sand! It meticulously depicts the non-existent world of Arrakis, bringing it to… https://t.co/irVAxRfNyK

Fans of both the Snatcher designer and Dune 2 agreed that Kojima’s words were an accurate description of the film. Many cinema lovers commented under the review that the God / Lisan al Gaib has spoken. Kojima will soon enter the world of cinema with a film adaptation of his critically acclaimed game, Death Stranding (via Deadline).
Dune: Part Two Hits $200 Million Mark In Global Box Office
According to Forbes, Dune: Part Two has reportedly grossed $200 million at the box office and is expected to collect $260 million by Friday, ending the week strongly. The highly positive reviews from critics and great word-of-mouth have helped the film to hit the numbers on the higher end of expectations. While Warner Bros. predicted a conservative $65 million debut for the film in the U.S. and Canada (via Deadline), the actual collection stood at $81.5 million.
The film seemed to have expanded its fanbase beyond sci-fi fans and even beyond borders, as its international debut added $97 million. The domestic debut of the film far exceeds the first film, which made $41 million on its debut in 2021. However, the simultaneous HBO Max release may have influenced these numbers, which makes Hideo Kojima’s words about the sequel even more valuable.
Timothée Chalamet is also turning out to be a bankable star, with his highly praised performance in Dune 2. His previous release, Wonka, also made Warner Bros. good returns on investment. One of the major competitors for Dune: Part Two is the upcoming film Kung Fu Panda 4, which will hit theaters on March 8, 2024.
The first film, Dune, is now available for streaming on Max.
