Eccleston, though he usually prefers to avoid big budget productions, was part of two pretty big franchises in his career. One was the 2009 movie, G. I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, and the other was the MCU’s Thor: The Dark World in 2011. Unfortunately, the actor hated being a part of both these films.

Christopher Eccleston Regretted Being in Thor 2

Christopher Eccleston played the main antagonist, Malekith, in Thor: The Dark World. The movie in itself was one of Marvel’s least liked productions. And the character of Malekith was one of the most underdeveloped, with almost no background story to give it more depth.

Eccleston absolutely hated playing the Dark Elf in the movie, a character for which he had to sit in the makeup chair for close to 6 hours. In an interview with The Guardian, Eccleston describing his experience in the movie said:

“Thor? Just a gun in your mouth.”

Directed by Alan Taylor, the movie is one of the lowest rated MCU movies on Rotten Tomatoes, with 67% on Tomatometer.

It’s not just Thor 2 that he regretted doing in his career. Christopher Eccleston also hated being part of the sci-fi franchise, G. I. Joe, where he played James McCullen / Destro – a weapons dealer. His character was teased at the end of Rise of Cobra, but the 60 year-old despised doing the movie so much, there was no way he would agree to do another. In The Guardian interview, he said:

“Working on something like GI Joe was horrendous. I just wanted to cut my throat every day.”

He further added:

“GI Joe and Thor were … I really paid for being a whore those times.”

G. I. Joe: Rise of Cobra is available for streaming on Paramount+ while Thor: The Dark World can be streamed on Disney+.
