Timothée Chalamet rose to prominence after playing Elio Pearlman in Luca Guadagnino’s acclaimed 2017 movie Call Me by Your Name. The coming-of-age romantic drama explored the sexuality of Pearlman when he encountered Oliver, played by Armie Hammer.
While appearing on Variety’s Actors On Actors, Chalamet revealed some excruciating details about the movie and a real-life incident similar to the movie. The interview took an awkward turn but fans got to know the steamy details of the actor’s life.
Timothée Chalamet Accidently Hinted Details of His Personal Life
When Timothee Chalamet and Nope star Daniel Kaluuya appeared on Variety’s Actors On Actors, several things about the actors unfolded. But on Chalamet’s part, it was rather interesting as the actor accidentally hinted that he tried the similar to the movie depicted. The actor candidly recalled his conversation with the director.
“Uh, so, that was maybe three, four weeks into the shoot. And obviously, you’re aware of why that would help, because first-day jitters, you’re all over the place. And it just, there was the, there was an anxiety that was taken away, in that Luca Guadagnino, our director, said, he thought maybe it worked better as a literary metaphor in the book, and that it could never really work well as a visual metaphor. And he came up to me, you know, maybe a week, two weeks before shooting, and he goes, ‘Timmy, you know, I tried it, and it works!’ And I was like, ‘of course, it works, Luca, like were you never a teenager…’”
In the fluency of the conversation with Kaluuya, the Call Me By Your Name actor hinted at his potential experience stating, “No, we won’t get into that, no” with laughter. But when Kaluuya asked him if he tried it before, the 27-year-old urged him for the next question.
Timothée Chalamet Preferred Spontaneity in Call Me By Your Name
Speaking of the dependency on the source material, Chalamet revealed that he preferred spontaneity in his breakthrough role. Based on André Aciman’s novel of the same name, Call Me By Your Name, as described by the actor, is like The Bible. In the moments “where I’d be really struggling and couldn’t figure out what was going on with the character, it really was like a Bible, it was like an infinite amount of stuff to pull from,” Chalamet said on the Variety show.
“But then especially in a coming-of-age movie, in a sexual coming-of-age movie, like, spontaneity, those are my favorite moments in movies like ‘Blue is the Warmest Color,’ and films like that. So I didn’t want to lose that. So, yeah, I don’t know, it’s a fine line, cuz you want to be faithful to the book, too,” he added.
Further, the Dune actor had conversations with the director of the film with his suggestions that go beyond the pages of the book. In the pre-production process, “once we were shooting, like I said, if I got lost in a scene, or sometimes I could even say something to Luca, ‘Don’t you think it would happen like this?’” Chalamet said. “And he would be like, “Can’t, because this is how it goes down here,” he added. But it was certainly a riveting experience for the actor.
Call Me By Your Name is available to stream on Netflix.
