After Wonka and Dune Part Two, it seems like Timothée Chalamet is shaping up to become Hollywood’s next leading man, rivaling the likes of Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Cruise during thier younger days. The actor has left his mark on the box office, causing studios to look at the young actor as a bankable talent who is worth signing for bigger-budget films.
On the other hand, Tom Holland, despite bringing in a considerable amount of money playing Spider-Man, has been unable to stick the landing with films and franchises outside of the MCU, such as the Uncharted series. It seems that despite being a part of bigger box office premieres than Chalamet, Holland will be easily eclipsed by him when it comes to a paycheck.
Timothée Chalamet could easily be looking at double-digits
According to Variety, Timothée Chalamet is on his way to securing at least $10 million if not more going forward, thanks to his continued success at the box office. Chalamet received a whopping $8 million for his work in Wonka.
The actor might be on a role, with the Dune franchise cementing him as a great box office pull. The director of the first two Dune films, Denis Villeneuve, is almost done with the third Dune script, which is also going to feature Chalamet as Paul Atreides. No doubt, this film, after the success of the second film, will have a massive crowd, further propelling Chalamet towards a higher paycheck.
However, such success only comes via a box office performance across genres. Despite the pull to the theatres, Chalamet’s films are supplemented by the fact that they are adaptations of popular books (Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roal Dahl and Dune Parts One and Two from Dune by Frank Herbert, along with bankable names like Jessica Ferguson and Florence Pugh). However, given how consistent the films have been in their revenue, put the responsibility squarely on the back of the leading man.
Tom Holland might need to up his ante at the box office
While Chalamet has found success at the box office even outside his franchises of note, Tom Holland has failed to strike a note with the audience outside of his performance as Spider-Man. To even put them into perspective, his films have had leading men like Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., and Benedict Cumberbatch to supplement them,
Films outside of the MCU, such as Uncharted, Chaos Walking, The Devil All the Time, and Spies in Disguise have failed to work for the actor, having missed the mark when they landed in theatres and on streaming services. As of the writing of this article, Business Insider estimates a salary between $5 million to $10 million for the actor in the leading role with a major franchise, as has been the actor’s salary for his Spider-Man films.
