Bleach is the undeniable home of epic anime battles. Its effect is so ingrained in fans’ brains that you can’t read the word “Ban-kai” without pretending you are holding a deadly sword. Tite Kubo, the creator of the masterpiece, sat down for an interview with Shonen Jump to discuss some unusual details regarding Bleach characters.
While the interview began by answering light questions about Kisuke’s shop, Kubo’s favorite characters, and envying Kon’s carelessness; it soon delved into some deeper questions. Kubo talked about which characters he would like to see battling each other, and no, it’s not a villain showdown; rather, you can call it friendly fire.
Which characters does Tite Kubo want to see fighting each other in Bleach?
In an interview with Shonen Jump, Tite Kubo was asked which characters he would want to see fighting each other. In response, Kubo picked Shunsui and Ukitake. Shunsui Kyoraku is the captain of the 1st Division, and Jushiro Ukitake is the captain of the 13th Division. Both of them are best friends.
“I can’t imagine a reason they would fight each other in the story. They get along so well; they have been best friends for so long. I’d want to see what a fight between them would be like.”
Tite Kubo also chose another duo to battle each other, Ichigo and Kaien. His reason for choosing them was that it was impossible to fight due to Kaien’s death.
Why did Kubo choose Shunsui Vs. Ukitake and Ichigo Vs. Kaien?
Tite Kubo explains that both Shunsui and Ukitake are nitoryu or two-handed swordsmen. Nitoryu refers to the usage of two swords at the same time. Shunsui is ambidextrous and can switch his two swords between his hands, which surprises his opponents. Ukitake transforms his blade into two red chains while using Shikai. His special ability is to absorb an attack through his left sword and release it through his right after increasing its potency.
While the abilities of both the captains are shown in different instances in the anime, they have never fought each other. And why would they? Both are loyal and compassionate friends, who never fight for pleasure.
As for Ichigo and Kaien, Tite Kubo simply thought of the two characters who would never be able to face each other. In fact, Kaien had died long before Ichigo arrived at the Soul Society.
Another reason why Tite Kubo chose him could be because of how closely he resembled Ichigo, accounting for his spiky hair and long face. He was a down-to-earth man, respected by many. He believed in fighting to protect life and honor, much like Ichigo. Kaien died fighting to avenge his wife’s death and even after his Zanpakuto disintegrated, he fought with his bare hands.
Kaien and Ichigo have similar moral integrity, and they both care for Rukia. Tite Kubo could have randomly chosen a dead character, but his choice of Kaien is a reminder of his strength.
