Margot Robbie starrer Barbie is making headlines all over the world. The film has easily become one of the most successful films of all time, even leaving behind Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. After having earned more than $450 million worldwide and still grossing, it has opened up new opportunities for the Toy based company Mattel.
In the wake of Barbie’s success, Mattel seems to have started work on numerous new projects based on some of its most famous toys. And even Tom Hanks has jumped on the wagon to bring a new toy-based film to life.
Tom Hanks To Make A Barbie-Like Movie
Barbie has been dominating the box office worldwide recently. Even with the presence of films like Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part 1 and Oppenheimer, Greta Gerwig’s visionary film has shocked critics and audiences with its fresh take on the pink tale. Barbie’s owner and maker, Mattel, has been for a while planning on expanding its influence in the cinematic world as well and has had been preparing for other projects for a while. But now they seemed to have gotten the final push and impetus to bring the Mattel world to life on the big screen.
Among the various films and storylines in development, Major Matt Mason has been in the works, starring none other than the prominent actor, Tom Hanks. Even though it was originally announced way back in 2019, Margot Robbie starrer Barbie’s success has finally propelled Mattel to continue its development but at a much faster rate.
Tom Hanks would be essaying the role of an astronaut Major Matt Mason, a popular action figure from the 1960s, who resides and works on the Moon! In the midst of the writers and actors strike, it seems difficult that the film would be announced anytime soon, but it is nonetheless compelling to know Hanks playing such a role.
After Barbie’s Success, Would There Be A Sequel?
Barbie has shocked the world with its excellent representation and revolutionary storyline while maintaining the originality and authenticity of the popular children’s toy. In the wake of its success, fans have been dying to know whether there will be a sequel to the film. While Greta Gerwig has no plans as she states,
“At this moment, it’s all I’ve got.”
Mattel executives have other plans as they expressed the immense possibilities the Barbie universe holds,
“Barbie, as a brand, has many different iterations. The product lines of Barbie is a very broad brand. In addition to the main Barbie figure, she has family, she has a lot of elements around in her universe. It’s a very rich universe… It’s a very broad and very elastic brand, in terms of opportunities.”
While we are certainly excited to have a Barbie sequel, it would be equally exciting to have other real-life films made on popular Mattel toys.
Barbie is in theatres now.
